Fabio Testi is a violent killer on the loose and Jean Gabin is an aging cop disconnected from the world tasked with putting him down. Routine downbeat movie. Like a lot of late Gabin movies it plays most around a radical diacomfort with then current France. His energy is so low most of the cop stuff is a slog so things are predictable but a bit better on the Testi scenes. It is very professionally made, Claude Renoir shot it and the supporting cast includes a pretty good turn by Bernard Blier and an early Depardieu appearance. There’s not much going on beyond punishing drudgery.
Jean Gabin? Oui!
Eurocrime? Oui!
And it works!
It’s not anything special, but it’s better than a great deal of the Eurocrime I’ve seen. Probably the acting... I digress. A serial killer escapes after being sent to a psychiatric hospital. Detective Le Guen (Gabin) is sent to track down the killer.
The first hour is excellent: good action, suspenseful chase, girl drops in, etc. And then it becomes fairly blasé per the usual cat and mouse. Things that keep it going, albeit slowly: acting, soundtrack, settings, and the girl. Her situation is the only one that really seems worth caring about, especially in the last 1/4 of the film.
But, hey—if you like Eurocrime (especially French) it should be on your list.
Cold, distant polar tells the story of a young ruthless man escape from jail and the older detective's methods to catch him...
