Sometimes I'm embarrassed by my country. It was a pretty bold decision to base the plot and character relationships on every family film from the 90s. There's this whole thing about the parents being separated when it's painfully obvious they'll get back together even though the dad is a wastrel. One thing I had never seen before was making bio security personnel villains. You know, the people who keep dangerous plants, insects and other materials from destroying our ecosystem. Are these people you want to vilify for children?
The entire film was shot outside on a beach somewhere and is sometimes overcast and sometimes a bit sunny, either way it's always blandly lit and dull looking.
The music is a bit overbearing, but at least it has some flavour. Likewise the performances aren't bad considering the budget and tv feel.
New Zealand has made great films, interesting films, important films. This was not one of them.
