Time travel, still images, a past, present and future and the aftermath of World War III. The tale of a man, a slave, sent back and forth, in and out of time, to find a solution to the world’s fate. To replenish its decreasing stocks of food, medicine and energies, and in doing so, resulting in a perpetual memory of a lone female, life, death and past events that are recreated on an airport’s viewing pier.

La Jetée is 28 minutes long and it says more about love, existence, time, and memories than any film that I've seen in awhile. Never has a film so calmly devastated the viewer with such intimate portrayals of human emotion and its influence on survival and connection. Chris Marker's film is a brooding masterwork of a short-film, and I can't wait to delve back into its quietly hypnotic rhythms in the near future.
Stunning.
Beautiful.
Mesmerizing.
Important.

Required viewing for anyone interested in film and storytelling.
Two things stuck when I finally sat down to the exceptional La jetée:
First, the method of telling this story is ingenious (besides being admirably efficient). The use of still frames juxtaposed with fluid audio accentuates the jerkiness of the visuals. I found it delightfully clever that a film about time-travel is essentially forcing us to internalize the passage of time with the virtual jump-cuts separating each still and the freezing of time while we soak in the information presented (much the same as we do with family photo albums).
Secondly, what a fantastic story. Of course, I love 12 Monkeys, the most well-known adaptation of this short film, but it wasn't until now that it occurred to me another…
Images as a means of storing memory, cheating time, and rewriting history; bafflingly simple & poignant.
i am reminded of the faint remembrances of my childhood: the dog i swear we almost adopted (my mother gave me a confused look), the rug i laid down on that we stripped bare soon after, the step to the kitchen and the wide yard outside. they're too hazy to be memories and too real to be dreams. maybe someday, i'll capture them for my own.
our past is our present and there are times when we close our eyes and create a different picture. do not let your memories be a eulogy to what could have been.
your mind is a fossil record; your memories are reconstructions, not recollections. sometimes you’ll forget your dinosaurs were feathered; sadly, more often, you’ll forget their teeth.
La Jette, French Post Apocalyptic film, is a totally scary and controversial social commentary.
The setting about a completely devastated world because of the effects over humanity of WWIII bring you the feeling that living there is a total desperate and quite hell, dying slowly.
The concept is totally awesome and original; the script is very intense, and the direction is almost perfect and so stylish.
A totally paralized character as a lonely survivor looking for time travel in order to find an empty existentialist state really brings you down to his isolated, desperate psychology, just as the still photographs and images about a world that was once and is about to be in another future give you a perspective…
Still photographs for a man stuck in the past. No motion, no momentum. Still, stuck, stalled.
