Kind of at an in between with La La Land. As a fan of musicals, I loved that this was full of singing (although mediocre) and music (let's talk about the final sequence in the flashback - emotionally so powerful). The color schemes used are much more vibrant and bareable on the eyes as compared to Whiplash. However, I couldn't help but notice how whitewashed this was - whether purposeful or accidental, it is a bit uncomfortable to watch some of the actors of color being sidelined throughout the film. Also, as someone with a music background, the handling of the whole jazz element was awkward, incomplete, and frankly lazy. The overall plot was predictable, but is easily forgiveable. Definitely felt like this was overhyped, but regardless, for what it lacks it is still an enjoyable film with arresting visuals, nods to past musical films, and music.
