Last Days took me by surprise, I wasn't quite expecting what I got, with Gus Van Sant you really don't know, he's anywhere from Good Will Hunting to, well, this. This captured the heart of music to me, what it feels like to connect to a song, and how that music flows from the heart of its artist and into your own. Those long takes of listening to music, or making it, were some of the best moments.
Loosely based on the final days of Kurt Cobain, this film is risky in every way possible and I admire no other director for their sheer balls of trying something truly different than Van Sant, even if he doesn't always land. But what is presented is so beautifully articulated that anything less than this kind of risk wouldn't have reached that extra mile into my psyche. It's Gus Van Sant's Petra Von Kant for the troubled american artist.
