  When I was a kid, the armadillo rock scene really made me uneasy, which is significant because I have an irrational phobia of armadillos but still didn’t want to see the little bugger go out like that.

  tries to mold hoopers very specific brand of deranged mania and filthy texas textures into a generic commercial slasher. an inherently flawed concept that dulls a lot of what made the first two movies scary and works of genuine artistry. appreciate the level gruesomeness and didn't hate some of the cannibal family dynamics they updated for the late 80s (leatherface and his cassette player lol) but there's just nothing going on underneath the hood and the surface isn’t good enough to justify that. has none of the hysterical subjectivity or menacing, abstract snuff film qualities of the original film. it just hits the conventional beats the investors told it to with a mediocre competency. also, it can't be overstated how much of a mistake it was shooting this in california.

  This is better than I remember it being! I watched it a lot when I was a teen, but aside from some effective jump scares I didn’t remember it being particularly good although it is so maybe it’s aged well?

  It’s very 90’s and tries to combine the suspense of the first film with the comedy of the second. It succeeds more in the comedy area although like I said, there are some good jump scares. Young Viggo looks real good at the beginning when he’s doing his wholesome cowboy thing. 

  Definitely needs the bluray treatment...unless it already got it, in which case I missed something which isn’t really that surprising.

  Very watchable, even though there's nothing particularly inspired about it, with David J. Schow's script cribbing from MOTHER'S DAY as much as it does from the previous two installments. Jeff Burr does uncharacteristically picturesque work behind the camera, his desert oranges and nighttime blues striking the exact right foreboding notes for the carnage to come. With no real competition, Ken Foree and Viggo Mortensen can't help but be the cast standouts.

  I’ve never liked this movie. Turns out, I still don’t. It never feels like an actual Texas Chainsaw Massacre film for even a fraction of a second. It comes across more like a DTV cash grab ripping off Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It plays like a movie that you’d rent cause the video box art made you think it would be sort of like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 or 2, but then while watching it, the realization you were duped by an uninspired, generic clone would slowly, depressingly dawn on you.

  I've openly hated this movie for as long as I can remember. Almost nothing about it feels right. The cast is weird, especially the family. I hate the addition of the little girl with corn teeth. Doesn't work, don't like it, make it stop. There are two characters that seem to be a reprise of the Hitchiker or Chop-Top, but neither do it well. Viggo Mortensen's performance is like being force fed cold pea soup. The night scenes are WAY too dark. I recall watching this on vhs and not being able to see jack shit for 2/3 of the film. Also it takes place in Texas yet there are Joshua Trees everywhere.

  In some respects, I admire the effort in this entry to return to the familiar tone of the original. I've never been a big fan of Part II, despite Hooper being at the helm, and Dennis Hopper leading the way. I know it seems impossible to screw up a Hooper/Hopper combo, but the complete shift in tone always left me wanting.

  So, when Leatherface opened with a scroll of text that not only resembled the first movie, but suggested it was acting as a continuation on the true Sally Hardesty universe rather than the bizarre detour of Part II's uncle Lefty, I was even more intrigued.
