I originally wanted to watch American Psycho but stumbled upon that instead and was like "hm, it looks like those cheesy Thanksgiving comedies BUT with a lesbian twist" so of course I had to make it my priority. All in all, it's the usual coming out comedy (main character wants to come out at family dinner but various quiproquo ensues) and it's far from perfect but honestly? I had a lot of fun and isn't it what matters. It made me think a lot of Jenny's Wedding at first which was terrible but it picks up quickly and ends up being a MUCH more enjoyable film on every aspect.
Also the main actress is also the writer/director of the film & she apparently made another film before in which she, again, plays a lesbian, so I think it's fair to assume she's a lesbian herself and I think it's nice that she's putting so much work in making films like that.
I want to rate this higher because CUTE LESBIANS and so many boring hetero rom coms like this are out there, but I got so frustrated with Lauren’s family that it stopped being comedic and became lazy writing more than anything else. Also, Lauren’s brother was so uncomfortable, and I get that he’s a representation of dudes irl but I can only take so much of men’s dumbassery used for comedy.
Finally, a holiday film with same-sex romance.
To be honest, we rarely see films like this on TV.
I must admit though, I was considering giving this a three and a half when halfway through was very slow, but in the end I decided to give it a good 4 stars.
I did enjoyed this film. It was touching, humorous and had a great cast; most notably Steve Guttenberg and Bruce Dern.
And the storyline was very well written. And I'd personally feel frustrated too whenever I visit family!
For me, it was just another romcom. Granted, the title was very obvious regarding the plot (which was just lazy writing).
I hope they'll be Christmas films with same-sex themes - we're moving forward to a new age and filmmakers should try something new.
you know those annoying feel-good holiday comedies? this is one of those but for lesbians. the acting was a bit shaky and the story jumped a little but overall i could not stop smiling while watching it. it’s one of those movies that is so fun to watch around the holiday season and it had a happy ending which made me smile.
ONE STAR FOR THE CUTE-ISH ENDING
I laughed a lot throughout this movie, because it was so bad it was funny. The main character really annoyed me and the plot.... where is she. Cute that it's gay or whatever but fuck this was a bad movie.
Annoyed that lesbian romcoms are all about coming out and always two standard of beauty following femme white women. tired!!
spoilers below
the Most annoying / buckwild / horrible parts
- the scene where two white men chased the black male character because tHE FOURTEEN YR OLD WHITE DAUGHTER FORCED HERSELF ONTO HIM
- when the main character suddenly said "I don't want to be gay okay!" tO HER GF???? THAT SHE'D BEEN DATING…
Them jokes! HA HA HA! This movie wants YOU to know they came with the jokes ladies! Drilling those FUNNY jokes into your head! Woo look at That script? C-L-E-V-E-R. I CANNOT stop laughing. In fact, I'm still laughing right now.
(i change my mind, maybe i don't want a gay lady romcom after all LOL but i appreciate this cheesy ass effort i guess??? *grimacing emoji*)
Cheesy lesbian coming out movie with an all star cast of actors. Besides the two leads Kevin Pollack has the best role. The scene with him scaring the bejesus out of Lauren's "boyfriend" with a death threat was hilarious. The best one liners usually come during scenes where everyone is talking at once so keep your ears peeled because several are real doozy s'.
This is simultaneously terrible and also cute and inoffensive. Basically perfect for if you can't sleep and want to throw on a hallmark movie or some similar mood.

In general, "written/directed/(co)produced/starring" the same person is bad news for a film. This one's not so bad. Nothing shocking or "new" in the story ~ but kudos for it being the story of a lesbian woman (rather than a straight white male) coming to terms with romantic fears!
This movie gave me crippling anxiety and frustrated me so bad, but hey, the ending was cute
