ugh the melissa mccarthy cinematic universe never disappoints! she will defeat thanos
not to be predictable here on letterboxd dot com but gillian jacobs' character was a lesbian and here's my proof:
-bad at math
-has a jumper that says "alcohol you later", proving that she is 1) a fan of puns and 2) a fan of alcohol, both tenets of gay culture
-would be cute with melissa mccarthy's goth roommate
-often looks bemused by str8 people's antics
So the big joke of this movie is that Melissa McCarthy is too old to be in college but that joke falls flat when literally everyone in the movie looks too old to be in college.
I had to watch my step when I walked out of the theatre because there were wigs scattered everywhere. There's a plot twist that no one saw coming and the entire audience (including myself) screamed!!!!! I was pleasantly surpised by how genuine and funny the film was, but watching Melissa McCarthy is always a delight.
Watching this film, which many consider the best of the tragic collaboration between Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, something tugged at me - Ben Falcone is the poor man's version of Adam Sandler. More than once, I found myself thinking that, if it were a Happy Gilmore movie, maybe the dog would do something completely ridiculous that had my stomach in knots, but in this one, the movie just cuts to the dog and he's just... there. Yeah, it was honestly better than I thought it would be. I laughed quite a bit more than expected. There was a scene that got me, and the folks I watched this with, laughing for a solid minute or two, straight.
I need more Maya Rudolf and Gillian Jacobs in my life, and less Debby Ryan... god, what the hell is she doing in this?
Also, just an observation, but there were a few 180 breaks between cuts that just stick out. I mean, I know this isn't a film that should be considered as a high standard in filmmaking, but come on... get your shit together filmmakers.
But other than that (and some cheesy ass moments), it's a good time, if you're looking for it.
Perfect for Mother's Day... or just something to watch with your mom.
My mom and I agree that this should've just been Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy hanging out for 100 minutes.
Life of the Party is a passable mashup of familiar cliches. It's great in moments, but flat overall. None of the highs of college life are depicted as being all that exciting, which may be relatable in my experience, but boring in the case of the movie. The characters were all pretty one-note, and I couldn't even identify what that note was for some of them. While it's definitely not as funny as I hoped it would be, I'll always enjoy watching characters form new friendships and support each other. It feels wholesome.
