Testing the skills of an assassin by having your messengers only deliver his mission info if he can successfully kill them…it’s an interesting strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off.
Itto fighting 30 guys whilst in his undies is a vibe and Daigoro making kissy faces at a princess is not something I knew I needed, but honestly I’m running out of new glowing things to say about this series. Every movie is its own unique version of perfection. Somehow, now five films in, I found this one to have the most compelling actual mission (which turns into a fucking Kill Bill-esque bloodbath at the end), and yet I’m legitimately dreading watching the final movie. Does life go on after this series?
Sure, I'm a fan of the Bond films, Star Wars, the Godfather movies, Lord of the Rings trilogy and the MCU...but now five films in, and I have no doubt that the Lone Wolf and Cub run of flicks constitute my favorite movie series of all time. Period. Not up for debate.
Art house meets exploitation greatness. As I've watched each LW&C film thus far (still another to go) I've found myself wondering if the entry I'm currently watching is my favorite of the series. That's how pulled into the individual stories I've been with each of these. That said, "Baby Cart in the Land of Demons" somehow manages (ultimately) to be the darkest of the lot. While continuing to…
Series highlight: Itto assassinates Abbot Jikei from underwater, sawing a hole in the Abbot's boat that he falls neatly through like Wile E. Coyote.
The fifth entry in the Lone Wolf and Cub series sees director Kenji Misumi back at the helm for a slower paced story which begins with a truly surreal sequence that sees Itto Ogami hired by five messengers, but only on the proviso that he is successful in killing them all. One guy delivers his part of the message while literally burning to death! The dying men piece the plot together and then we move into a story that sees Itto and son on a quest to kill an Abbot who is bearer of a private letter. This entry features some of the best sequences of the series - an underwater assassination scene is a major highlight, while Daigoro gets…
Ogami the pimp gets briefly upstaged by his own son when he takes a public flogging like a madlad. One of the best scenes in the series, hands down.
Still, Ogami continues to rock his array of weapons, spraying blood around like everyone’s blood pressure is through the roof. Some of the best fights take place in this entry. The entirety of the finale is a beautiful display of carnage. Phenomenal double decapitation if I do say so myself.
May be the best in the series. It’s hard to decide, but damn did this movie bring it’s A game.
The consistent quality of this series is so impressive. This one verges on being too convoluted for its own good but the action as always more than makes up for it.
Anyone feel like recommending some other good Misumi films to check out next?
The first half of Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons is a slow burn, focusing on developing the plot. The second half goes all out with amazing and brutal sword fighting scenes. Who would've thought this series could still improve after five films?
Wow, we are now 5 movies in and this train is just not slowing down. Or wait. Scratch that. This is when the train slows down but chugs ever so preciously through a beautiful scenic route.
If each entry of THEE Lone Wolf & Cub has something to distinguish itself from the others, then I dub this the "sophisticated" one.
Ogami and Daigoro are back, duh, but here they move carefully through a somewhat more elegant and mature tale. After defeating a series of devoted assassins, Ogami receives his main task, which is to snuff out an Abbott and also a Lord, his mistress, and their daughter (who has been disguised as a boy to become the heir to his lineage).…
You know, it’s been way, WAY too long since I’ve dipped my toe into this universe. 2019, to be exact! Back in ’16 I purchased the Criterion set that was a new release at the time from Amazon because they made a mistake and listed it for I believe 40 bucks when it should have been 100. I jumped on that and thankfully they honored that price, which was fixed by the time the set was received. Slowly, the first four movies plus Shogun Assassin were reviewed; for no good reason, the last two films never got watched. I really enjoyed all of them, so about darn time I finish the six movie franchise before 2023 concludes. Eventually, a list…
"That kid is terrifyingly courageous" -Adoring Crowd Member,
I'm all about that fear of and respect for Cub.
The fifth installment continues the consistent pattern of entertaining martial arts schlock and interesting stories. While the gore declines here a little I love the five assassins and the finale is brilliant.
there's a scene in this one where itto ogami watches as his son little daigoro gets flogged by cops for no reason and the master samurai says nothing to make sure his son doesn't fucking snitch. needless to say, young daigoro doesn't say shit.
this is going to be me as a father.
There’s nothing better than watching Itto Ogami kick some samurai ass, as Daigoro watches like a boss!!!!
Still can’t believe he did what he did, that’s why ITTO OGAMI IS THAT FUCKING DUDE!!! Can’t wait to finish off this series soon!!!
