I admit that I was on the fence when I started reading all the bad reviews and seeing the low ratings. Then I went with my gut feeling and saw it anyway. After all, VENGEANCE was unfairly maligned and I gave it the same rating: 3/5. Not a masterpiece, but not that bad, especially going into it with exceedingly low expectations (it's not Charles Dickens, so what do you expect?).

I'm really torn about this movie. On the one hand, it feels like David Lynch wanted to make a movie, but forgot how. On the other hand, this is a movie where Nicolas Cage uses a dollar bill to clean his glasses.
No one on here likes this movie very much, and I get it. I'm fully in the bag for Cage; if you're like me, here are five reasons you should watch this movie:

So glad to see Tim Hunter break from his incredibly prolific television career to direct his first feature film in years. He seems to have metaphorically brought John Dahl back to the medium with him. This harkened back to those atmospheric nineties noir thrillers that often revolved around conflicted sleep-chasing protagonists and grisly murder mysteries. The scenario is clearly inspired by the seedy circumstances in Gay Talese's The Voyeur's Motel which were also detailed in the recent Netflix documentary Voyeur. Very good late night cable cinema. 7.9/10
A psycho-sexual mystery thriller, light on the psycho and the sexual and the mystery and the thriller, through I think glaring misteps from the script and the TV show director, but heavy on Cage carrying the weight with a surprisingly traditionally good simmering-nuance performance as the past-demons-haunted pervert fresh-faced proprietor of a murder-grounds voyeur motel in the middle of fuckin nowhere, trying to make a fresh start with his ex-junkie wife post the death of their child by inexplicably buying said motel from a nutcase. After my Superbowl LVI dreams were trampled by some horned sheep on Sunday, I was left with nothing but a broken heart & a brazen effrontery that took the figurative form of an empty glass bottle just spinning aimlessly on the cement floor of a basement. Round & round & round it goes. Where it stops? .....Actually, no. Fk that. Fk you, bottle; bc you know what? I'm in charge of my own destiny...& it's high time I watch all these Nic Cage time-to-make-the-donuts flicks. Or at least some of them 😅

I am in no way implying that this is a good movie, and I think Robin Tunney is wasted here, but I got such a kick out of Cage watching D/s lesbian kinky time and finding out this obviously wets his whistle. Plus, there's some neon-drenched night scenes, I love that.
While Mom and Dad was an actual good Nicholas Cage movie, this one is the direct opposite. The acting in this movie was about as compelling as one of those cardboard stands, plus the writing doesn’t help either...it’s horrendous. Plus this movie doesn’t even feel like a Nicholas Cage movie at all, it feels like some drama or thriller or whatever the hell this suppose to be that tries too hard. Which leads to my main problem with this movie....it doesn’t know what it wants to be, the first two acts in this movie feel like it’s going for this long drawn boring drama and then the third act tries to make stuff happen for the sake of making stuff happen. But it doesn’t help that the characters are so uninteresting and the pacing is so off, if you want a good recent Nicholas Cage movie check out Mom and Dad because this is not a good one.

Looking Glass is the sort of trashy thriller that you watch when you know it will probably be good enough, and you're tired of trying to decide, so you simply surrender yourself to it. It has Nicolas Cage, which, nowadays, may or may not be a sign of quality, you just have to gamble. Robin Tunney is an actress I always admired so knowing she was in this too helped seal the deal. Surely, she would be in a good Nic Cage movie, not one of those other ones, right?

A rare pleasure to go into a movie knowing absolutely nothing about it. I didn’t even know what genre this was in. Turns out, all of them. This movie is all the genres. Totally weird creeper motel mystery (and horror and thriller and romance and drama and comedy and action, etc.), that is always fun to watch and with a cast that is definitely enjoying themselves. Who knew Marc Blucas had it in him to upstage Cage? (Obviously, Cage is letting him. One of his most underrated talents as an actor is giving space for other actors to shine.) It maybe lacked focus, and forgot to answer some questions (who the fuck threw the pig in the pool?), but I found it to be very worth watching.
So Nic Cage has a motel and discovers there's a secret voyeuristic room where no one can see him but he can see them. At one point he whips his cock out and starts beating off while two lesbians fuck each other (this really does happen in the film by the way). I should be giving this 5 stars, it's pretty dope. Any negative reviews are wrong.
