It isn’t that Lost Girls ends up “failing” in any category, but it never quite had me as gripped as it thought it did. This film is a beautiful acting showcase, as every single performance works extremely well. Amy Ryan brings an emotional performance that showcases how far a loving mother is willing to go. Thomasin McKenzie (subtly) dominates every second of screen time. Their relationship is one of the more integral elements of the film, and it’s the up and down aspect (of where it takes them) that hits so hard towards the end. It also shines light on the fact that some just dont do as much as they…
There’s a line in this movie where a cop says “A policeman deals in evidence, not anger” and I would just like to say this came out in 2020 and the line has already aged terribly.
PS Amy Ryan and Thomasin McKenzie are fantastic in this and definitely carry the movie.
thomasin mckenzie and lola kirke saved this film—the production was unfortunately lacking in a lot of areas (besides the accurate portrayal of how incompetent police officers are and how badly they treat people) but this true story is so incredibly important and i'm so glad netflix uses their platform to bring real life issues that matter to the spotlight. sex work is work and sex workers are people too; lost girls did a really great job at showing that despite its faults and i believe it comes down to the fact that it was directed by a woman. i hope audiences get to see more of these stories and i hope that we fight to see them portrayed accurately.
why does thomasin mckenzie sound like a 45 year old chain smoking new yorker in this
Based on a true story, and a very interesting one, this movie fails miserably to tell it. I don't know how this story could be boring, but this movie did it. Partially because the editing is a mess and all over the place.
I bet that there's a documentary about this murders 1000 times better, just watch that instead. This movie has no point whatsoever.
Well, the music and soundtrack was enjoyable, I guess.
This movie makes a smart decision in the writing and execution: it focuses on Mari Gilbert's fight. It doesn't focus on or sympathize (much) with the police. It doesn't focus on the killer, who remains unknown anyway. It focuses on the mother of one of the victims, but not in a way that diminishes the victims. Instead, she becomes their advocate; through her surrogacy, we feel the pain of loss, the anger and frustration caused by the police and the demonization of sex workers (though it is far from perfect on that score). It does not delve deeply into the story of Sarra Gilbert, whose tragic role in this story would probably not have been handled well by a major…
For nearly 20 years, Long Island was home to a serial killer. This still-unidentified devil is believed to have murdered 10-16 sex workers from 1996 to 2013, approximately. These heinous acts went unnoticed by law enforcement for almost two decades, and it’s this dark crime that documentary filmmaker, Liz Garbus, explores in her first narrative feature film, Lost Girls. Specifically, the film follows the disappearance of 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert and the investigation (or lack thereof) into her possible murder that leads to a trail of corpses – the unsolved cases of more than a dozen missing and murdered sex workers.
Shannan’s last moments open this tale of horrors as she is seen running for her life – her face remaining…
Deeply disturbing true story of a serial killer on the loose and the inept bungling and general non-interest by the police involved.
The actors saved this movie, it gets a little dull when it should have been propelling forward even more. But overall, it's worth watching. It's very informative on an actual case on Long Island. Stay through the end credits for extra depressing updates on the characters. Not a happy story.
Lost Girls is a great, meditative look at a real life event I've never really heard of - the still unidentified Long Island serial killer. The film wonderfully explores the miscarriages of justice and the failings of the police whilst making all sides sympathetic, to an extent. It could've been easy for the film to be a detective thriller, but by focusing on the families it is able to hit home the weight of the events that transpired.
True stories are continually churned into cannon fodder for the movie market. Not until very recently, with the rise of streaming services and independent filmmaking, has there been a film for every slight pocket of history. Lost Girls is one such film, an event that is tragic enough to spin a true-crime tale, but not engaging or detailed enough to provide a feature-length's worth of information. Still, why stop the inevitable? Lost Girls is such an adaptation, one that looks to shed some form of publicity on the Long Island serial killer, an unidentified murderer who preyed on sex workers in the New York area.
As horrible an event that is, Lost Girls does not capture the nuance or fear…
honestly only a quarter of a way through & it has the potential to be really good the story is interesting but it's simply dull. thomasin mckenzie is carrying the entire film.

Truly a tragic story but I found this painful to watch, it was only an hour and a half but felt like 5 hours long.
important to depict the victims, but even with that goal and incredible performances, characters don’t feel fleshed out or explored enough
I started watching this movie and then I realized that I actually was very familiar with this case because of Crime Junkie. I enjoyed the movie and I was really excited when I saw that Thomasin McKenzie was in it.
Was waiting for something more to happen, but I think crime junkie podcasts are wayyy more interesting than this movie 😥 however the acting was really good... especially the two sisters.. and the portrayal of a true story was great too... sad tho
