Absolutely not a fan of this. The story was so weak, even repulsive, and the dry dialogue was obnoxious. I saw the twist coming right away. Nope.
when I heard Netflix was doing an animated adult sci-fi anthology I was incredibly excited! went into this first episode expecting to love it... but 15 minutes later, I was left not only unconvinced, but doubtful that I'll be watching any more of the series.
personally I was turned off by the superficial, poorly written, misogynistic dystopian vision on display here. despite a surface-level impulse to disguise itself as a feminist critique of patriarchal institutions, the episode remains rooted in blatantly sexist tropes with its male gaze, excessive depictions of sexual violence, & exploitation of gang rape as a plot device.
any agency & triumph on the part of the female characters is undermined by their reductive rendering as clichéd cardboard cutouts…

Today: Love, Death & Robots: Sonnie's Edge
Hi everybody, as gamers we truly felt home, instantly. The characters' optic reminded us of the rotten, gloomy design of "Dishonored" with a touch of "Borderlands", the surroundings of under worlds we've barely seen in for example "Star Wars" on Coruscant or the filthy marketplaces in "Blade Runner". World building like the science behind the beast fights was done in a matter of seconds and off we go into a world of cage fights reminiscent of the game "Evolve" mixed with the idea of bloodthirsty Pokémon, so a little bit of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Fight Them. Futuristic and yet so disgusting…
About halfway through I was like, 'I bet this gross, male gaze-y rape revenge fantasy was written and directed by men' and hey, weren't those credits a surprise. (Oh, and it's also just completely incompetently made.)
Ugh... this first short really sucks. A bunch of horny dude animators tried to make a film that struggles for some feminist intent but is really just trash. Trash animation. Trash storytelling. Trash thirst trap. And not good trash. Boring trash. If you love 15 min. cut scenes in your video games, then ignore me and press on, because that's the thematic and tonal ambitions here. I'll try one more of the shorts from this series, but if its not ten times more interesting, I'm out.
Of all the shorts that I've seen so far this is the one that would most likely become a series. In the space of 16 minutes an entire world was built; think cyberpunk meets metamorphic Pokemon in a battle to the death. Whilst some of the dialogue might've been a little stiff the world building on display was nothing short of fantastic. The CGI was top notch and the underground pit fighting was thrilling. However, the short did lose a little bit of steam by the end as it followed a pretty generic story path. Even still, I had an absolute blast with this short and it made for an excellent introduction into the series.
Sonnies Vorteil

The animation is unbelievably gorgeous. The beastie fight was awesome and a few unexpected surprises that caught me off guard. Amazing! I’m excited to see the rest of this series.

You won’t care :
Since my semester break is coming near, starting from the 1st of April, I’ll be doing the 100 movie challenge, where I will try to watch one-hundred movies I haven’t seen, from any genres, in 3 months period, and make a review for each.
I’ve tried it once between December to February but ended up only watching 78. So I decided to give it another try. Feel free to join me!
