Love in the City? Well, you can’t argue about the City part, but Love? Not sure I saw any. More like Lack of Love in Rome. 6 directors mostly working a pseudo-docu style to varying degrees of sucess (as all omnibus films invariably are). Instead of outright love we get: prostitution, suicide, dancing, lycanthropy, abandonment, and lechery! Now, that’s a potent stew of amore. Filmed in the conceit of being a filmed magazine, the presentation works well enough and kept my strong attention throughout. Fellini’s story of arranged dating, lying, and werewolves was the most overt fiction in the bunch and probably excels in comparison to the rest. Most of the rest is a mix of fake documentary, restaged documentary, fly-on-the-wall faked documentary, and fake cinema-verite. The are just descriptions, not complaints. It makes for compelling viewing, but where the hell is the love?
