Hisayasu Sato reads the minds of all autistic trans lesbians and makes the perfect movie.
so little of this film should work at all let alone in anything resembling harmony yet it all does, or rather, in the end there's no sense in letting what doesn't work about the movie keep the movie from working for you. total dumbguy cinema but it's such a fucking battering ram of a film that, provided you're not looking at it too close up, yeah, sure, fuck it, its a smartguy movie. love & pop (i feel like there are a few shared filming locations, like that drained dam or whatever toward the end of both films) + perfect blue (though it often feels more like black swan (derogatory), which somehow came out like 2 days before this) + kimi…
Phew. Love & Loathing & Lulu & Ayano is something of a relief after the devastatingly disappointing Shisei the Tattooer. This might not be quite as hypnotic as late 80s Satô cinema, but it is excellent in its own way. And though different in tone and aesthetic, there are certainly themes that tie in with Satô's old obsessions and flashes of style (the buildings, the dim colours) that feel very much at home with the rest of his work. Love & Loathing packs a punch. It is a sad yet non-judgemental look at the AV industry. It never feels preachy. Instead, its focus is on identity crisis, loneliness, and broken fantasies. It unpacks porn stars, producers, and fans alike, picking them to pieces through…
Social commentary on the AV industry, self-constructed identity and parasocial relationships that's basically Perfect Blue for autistic trans girls. Change yourself even if you can't change this mess of a world.
Anyone who harrasses my transsapphic ass is going straight to hell 🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️ anyway watch this cool movie if you think sex workers are human beings
Sorry that I say this about any movie even minutely Love Exposure adjacent but; I would have appreciated this movie being about 2 hours and 12 minutes longer

youre a virgin, im a virgin. virgin blues...
feature length efukt video where the goal is to play a little game with yourself and keep jerking off until you find something too shameful
A very thoughtful, socially-conscious drama filled with commentary on the Japanese porn industry, otakus, and the obsessions that exist within fandoms. Really recommend this if you're trying to get into Satō, but aren't too keen on his typical aesthetic focus on sex and nudity, or the blatant, literal spotlight he usually places on sexual violence.
This still slams the transgender trauma button harder than just about any movie I've ever seen I am so sorry but it's true. Sato hit it out of the ballpark with this one.
