A very nicely done drama starring two Oscar winners...Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn. Landau plays an elderly man discovering love for the first time. He lives alone, works at a grocery store, and is not looking forward to another Christmas spent alone. A Christmas miracle occurs when he meets Burstyn and they fall in love.
Landau and Burstyn are outstanding in the movie. Elizabeth Banks and Adam Scott have nice supporting roles....Banks is Burstyn's daughter and Scott is Landau's boss. Watching these two people fall in love at such late stages in their life is very enjoyable and made believable by the memorable performances. I especially liked the final parts of the movie....as the movie provides a few surprises and gives a realistic ending. Shockingly when this movie went off....my first thought was that I needed to watch it again....that I did not see coming.

While The Twist To This Became Abundantly Apparent Less Than Halfway Through I Still Found Quite The Amount Of Enjoyment In It, Primarily On The Part Of Our Two Leads Martin Landau And Ellen Burstyn, It Was Superbly Refreshing To See A Romance With Elderly People Involved, Hollywood Has A Lot Of Stigmatization, In This Case I Mention The Elderly, They Are Not Just Two Old People Playing Grandparents They Are Real People Who Love, Hurt And Most Of All Feel, Our Two Leads Give Outstanding Performances, Their Chemistry Is Simply Poignant As Is The Message To The Movie, While The Overall Quality Of The Movie Is Marginally Above Average The Simple Yet Touching Nature And Demeanor Of This Sweet Adventure Make This A Pleasant If Somewhat Generic Holiday Movie.
What starts off as a ridicolously charming romantic comedy about an elderly man who's unexperienced in the field of love becomes so much more as it goes on.
SUPERB acting by Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn as the leads, and Adam Scott and Elizabeth Banks co-starring.
Highly recommended.
"...but I do hate them, though."
Way more clever than I expected. Tips its hand toward the ending a little bit but does so with both visuals and dialogue. The whole thing would have crumbled without veterans like Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn, but they do some fine work.
This was a major surprise. A love story between two elderly people. One person wrote that we need to watch this movie twice and both times are two different experiences. I believe that’s true, as knowing the ending will give another understand of the film. I’m looking forward to watching it again.
Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn are really great in this and have some charming chemistry, but the whole movie is reliant on the asinine “twist” that it really robs it of any kind of story or throughline.
MOVIE #7 SUMMER 100 CHALLENGE
This was not a planned watch but my family wanted to watch a movie and I didn't get much say.
I didn't hate this but it felt very hallmark holiday tv movie. Although it did have some redeeming qualities. The cinematography was good and the acting was pretty great but the story felt cheesy and the ending reveal was kinda spoonfed. But overall a sweet and wholesome movie that I would watch with my grandma.
What a superb and languid film this is, a nice slowdown in pace for a Christmas movie. Instead of screaming children and whiny adults, the leads here are seniors, hoping to enjoy one more Christmas in their lives. Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn are such professionals, it's a pleasure to watch them. Love can conquer loneliness but growing old means growing old.
Best roundabout sad-happy Christmas movie that’s more and heartbreaking on repeat viewings the older I get. Landau is phenomenal.

The two veterans perform well but the screenplay goes off the emotional rails toward the end.
A charming, tender movie about finding love in your twilight years, tainted by its surprise twist no one asked for. Without the twist it felt like a very genuine slice of life film that I’ve never seen anything quite like. Twist raises more questions than answers. Big mad. Big sad. 4/5.
When you are young the world is a ferris wheel
I know we will grow old it is lovely, still
Make a plan to love me sometime soon
From the Bright Eyes song that plays at the end.

- i long therefore i am movie #5 (#5 is technically mrs palfrey at the claremont but DVD kept skipping- it was a whole ordeal)
- had me in the first half i'm not gonna lie but kind of lost me by the end... like the ""plot twist"" was interesting but kind of wished it was just a story about old people finding love
- AND I LOVE seeing stories about old people tho! they're people too !!! they deserve to be in LOVE <3
- anytime i see an old man im like oh whoa he bears a maybe, kind of resemblance to my dad in ~15 years and i tear up immediately
