A fun movie! '80s Patrick Dempsey is always fun because he's still gangly and hasn't really come into himself yet. There's an awesome cast, and it's what makes Loverboy so fun: Kirstie Alley, Carrie Fisher, Barbara Carrera, Vic Tayback, Elizabeth Daily, Robert Picardo (!), and Robert Ginty (The Exterminator!). Seriously, it's a ton of talent for what's a pretty generic home-for-the-summer college sex comedy. This is definitely one of those charming movies where if I saw it young or when it came out, I'd have a huge affinity for it.
The amazing Joan Micklin Silver is at the helm, and that was my biggest disappointment, honestly. I came in because this was a JMS movie without knowing anyone else involved. It's directed well, but it's missing her verve and wit and intelligence that sets her direction at a higher bar than other "just good" directors.
Side note, I loved the animated title sequence done by American cartoonist Sally Cruikshank.
