Enjoyed Maanaadu. A solid, outrageously entertaining & self-aware masala romp. Venkat Prabhu is able to inject some socio-political timely ideas and humor into this fun, cleverly indianised entry in the GROUNDHOG DAY time loop genre. And despite its 150-minute runtime, the film is impeccably edited and packed with twist & turns, that it hardly lags.
Venkat Prabhu, smartly conceives and commercially blends a socio-political thriller within a time loop concept, that’s engaging and entertaining. The mythological reasoning to the Sci-Fi concept, though is ironically interesting, it also paves the way to be natively accessible to all. The narrative is cleverly written, taking its time initially to establish the premise, but later utilizes the vantage points to its plotting advantage, building its suspense and tension solidly. From the point of interval, it picks up the pace with racy quick edits. Simbhu and S.J.Suryah are simply terrific with their performances. A fun filled thriller, that’s terrifically entertaining.
I love the films that doesn't take it's audience for granted. I love it more when commercial directors makes a out and out commercial film with a star in centre but breaking the norms of commercial cinema in most ways possible. This year Nelson did that with Doctor and now, This film is one and Venkat Prabhu definitely knows his game too well!
This is a textbook definition of staying on line but not playing within the box. When all films were precisely about the antagonist wanting the protagonist to die, here we see SJ Suryah dying to protect Simbu's life at all cost. When the hero's death is used melodramatic and brought to screens as something that's least expected,…
Okay, Maanadu exploited the time loop concept really well. The editing and music were anchors of the film. And Venkat Prabhu's best after Mankatha and Chennai-28.
STR na comeback🔥
And it's sin to not mention S.J.Surya

just like palm springs! time loops, a wedding, a developing romance, attempts at assassinating India's chief minister. it's all there!
A 100 minute placeholder for a good 40 minutes. The unfortunate occurings in production quality were very much visible , ironically this movie wouldn't stand the test of time. Editing was too basic except for a single montage towards the climax and i am very much afraid this film has nothing to offer on a rewatch. Very mediocre direction saved by Background music and few jokes . Maybe if the movie was a completely original idea the above criticism could have been excused but the lack of passion (unfortunately or purposefully) shows and this film has nothing to offer more than the concept(which again is not original).
Initially it feels like the film is draggy and repetitive but when it progress further it's quite a good fun watch and also didn't except this amount of efforts from Venkat Prabhu to present the loop concept neatly and trimmed the repeated moments safely and at the same time certain repeated moments are cleverly placed to create an intriguing factor. Before he failed without his gang in Biriyani and Mass but here he just succeeded.
SJ Surya is the perfect cast, his over acting and his comedies are enjoyable. And STR gave a pretty decent performance and a much needed comeback for him.Surprisingly liked Yuvan's BGM work here.

It's been a long time since I watched a Tamil movie in theatre!
Time loop is a fictional plot device used for several years in a lot of mediums of storytelling. Unlike time travel, time loop is something that's not scientifically proven yet. So, storytellers use to narrate the cause behind the timeloop either in a sci fi or fantasy manner. I'm so happy that the director Venkat Prabhu took a fanatsy route and built a logic that is so convincing. The film is like "Vantage Point" meets "Edge of Tomorrow". Instead of mimicking Hollywood time loop movies, this movie is so indigenous in storytelling and the…
I was like 5minute late to the film (no idea what I missed) but it was like so much fun. A self-aware entertainer that doesn't break or make grounds, doesn't try to be anything else besides a good theatre experience. The main protagonist, antagonist and supporting characters don't have defined arcs either. Simbu's backstory kind of had all stereotypes you'd expect to see in a pretentious liberal mainstream film masquerading as a secular piece of entertainment, but we are not going there. May be they didn't intend to create a Groundhog Day for It's target audience. It's almost 150 minutes long as well. Nevertheless I was engaged. Yuvan's background music is still the best part of the film. Mainly why I think I liked the theatre experience that it was.
