I wouldn't suggest this film for pregnant women because the baby could be born bored.
Amazon/Blumhouse's Madres somehow managed to hold my attention yet still leave me pretty bored. The subject matter was strong. Story progresses in slowburn fashion but nothing ever happens tbh. Well acted throughout. I did enjoy seeing a predominantly Hispanic cast as I feel like they aren't represented in horror nearly enough! I wouldn't call this a horror film though.

This one manages to hold my attention for the most part. It's fairly enjoyable pregnancy horror with engaging mystery, spooky atmosphere and decent performances. I wanted to like this more but this film tries to cover an important subject but I don't think the film itself achieved whatever its trying to say so they just slap some real life facts and historical clips in the end to make the message clearer. I mean the subject is horrible and scary enough, I wish the film would've focused more on that instead of adding supernatural elements to it.
Slow-burn horror with plenty of atmosphere and contemporary resonance, but so so so uneven. For all its intriguing revelations, red herrings (pesticide! curses! ghosts!), and pervasive dread, Madres is constantly bogged down by filmmaking issues: awkward blocking and dialogue, poorly constructed jump scares, and maybe most egregious of all, an absurdly truncated climax. It's hard to describe without getting into spoilers, so suffice to say it feels like an entire act crammed into a single scene. And all throughout, Ryan Zaragoza's efforts to replicate the formal idiosyncrasies of '70s horror are so halfhearted as to be distracting. Very nearly my favourite Welcome to Blumhouse thing, but the rough edges are too conspicuous to ignore.
This movie is simply plain and boring. I just couldn't wait for it to be over. There's nothing special or scary about this flick. Not worth watching.
This is a lackluster year for ‘Welcome to the Blumhouse’. This is the second one I watched from 2021 and I was pretty much checked out earlier in the film. Uprooted to a farming community, a young pregnant Mexican-American woman and her husband begins their journey to build a better life for their family. But when the wife starts experiencing strange symptoms, one of which is seeing a ghostly apparition, she decides to uncover the truth. There was a message in this film but it gets buried underneath the drama with some horror elements that were not well executed. It was slowly paced and never picked up. By the time we got to the reveal, I’ve already lost interest. What a disservice to the actual events and tragedy.

Easily the most interesting and the most watchable Amazon/Blumhouse production collab of this year (The Manor is a close one too). Madres can be frightening for two reasons, for people that love a decent creepy/ghost story and for those who are getting terrify with real-life circumstances events that feel close to home.
I mean it but seriously, I loved that closing title cards a lot, it was surely unexpected and poignant. Although, I would have a prefer a much more serious and dramatic film when we venture into the ‘inspired from true events’ territory, Madres succeeded to be mysterious and intriguing throughout its short runtime, so a major win if you are looking for something compelling…
I've got a soft spot for these Spanglish films, but this one just isn't very good. There are some effective creepy moments, and a twist I enjoyed, but the wavering between the "supernatural or not" question really hurt the film.
Then the film ends by tacking on some statements about a very serious issue, but it really just felt cheap, when the film can't even commit to the message itself. That always leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The amount of whiplash this movie caused me is insane. It tried to be a horror film with a social message but instead just was about the message. While it preaches an important story it all feels wasted on this subpar horror flick. You feel like you're watching one thing then suddenly in the last five minutes you are treated to a lecture about the horrors of eugenics. If the people involved wanted to make something truly scary they would've ditched the supernatural and told a much more scary story with eugenics.
P.S. did the pandemic give everyone baby anxiety because I've seen too many movies this year that deal with the fear of parenthood?

Saved the best for the last. Finally, a decent one in the Welcome to the Blumhouse quartet, but that doesn't say much considering how disappointing the rest of the films are. Anyway, this Latino horror installment aptly named as Madres, starring Latina Kate Siegel, probably addresses the weightiest commentary and one which will incite reaction or education from the viewer with some of the things if shows, preferably the latter. Well, it certainly does educate for me. I had the lowest expectation for this one but it definitely intrigued me the most.

Con esta siendo la tercera del ciclo Welcome To Blumhouse 2021 me di cuenta que quizás Blumhouse está llenando su repertorio de cintas independientes que compró y no se venderían igual que varias del estudio, ya puedo decir que este año fue peor que el anterior.
La vi en el avión de regreso y me dio más miedo la turbulencia y la luz extraña en el cielo que vi que toda la cinta con un misterio que nunca me engancho, pero le subí media estrella porque literalmente la mejor parte son los créditos porque son los que te meten otro elemento que genuinamente me puso los pelos de punta. Los que la vieron sabrán a lo que me refiero.
