Maggie: That’s how I was conceived- on the bed with all the coats. My mom always says that it’s because I needed to be born.
John: I love that idea. That our unborn children are the real gods, dictating the fates of us poor, clueless mortals.
Greta Gerwig can brighten up any movie, but she especially shines playing a young woman who hasn’t quite figured out how to adult yet. Maggie’s Plan could fit into an extended Gretaverse (that’s mine - copyright!) of Frances Ha, Mistress America, Greenberg, 20th Century Women and Weiner Dog. And despite a cutesy, somewhat lazy third act, I really enjoyed this film’s look into the chaotic mess of love, parenting, and trying to make plans while God laughs. Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore and Bill Hader are terrific in supporting roles. Recommended!
