  How lucky are we to exist in a timeline where James Wan goes from directing the gonzo epic Aquaman to spicing up his own Horror resume with something like Malignant? If I had to describe a movie that checks every sort of box to appeal to me personally, it's this. Not only riffing on Gialli, James Wan returns to his terror roots with bone-deep references of splatter horror and 80s grindhouse. Mixes of Dario Argento, Frank Henenlotter, David Cronenberg, maybe even a dash of Sam Raimi. But it's all James Wan in function and practice. From the sincerity of its humor, to how the comedy is woven into the physically absurd action set-pieces, all while on the surface, the film is operating as a haunted house/serial killer procedural with undercurrents of campy melodrama. It's a great example of a delirious and delightful late-night scare-fest.

  are you KIDDING me with this shit this movie fucking rules. loved it beginning to end. had heard the ending was insanely good and yes it is but i honestly loved the kitschy, soapy procedural feel of the beginning too before it all went sicko mode. need me a freak like gabriel!!! if i ever see james wan in public it’s on sight (kissing on the mouth)

  A near-perfect merging of the ostentatious, expensive digital trickery Wan's been experimenting with for the last decade at WB (all insane wide-angle lens oners and impossible dolly/crane maneuvers through small spaces) and the unfashionably trashy, high-concept, nu-metal shock genre sensibilities that were popular around the time he got into making movies. Both have been fused here into a delightfully unruly mess that tricks you by pretending to be another polished haunted house trauma movie for a bit, then a serial murder mystery with the kind of surreal, gory, primary-color-lit sequencing you'd expect of Italy; all before pulling the rug on both to reveal... An action movie version of the grindhouse, conjoined-creature splatter-horror of Frank Henenlotter?
