I don't know, what's more Andy Kaufman:
Making everyone believe you're dead and never resolving it or dying and making everyone believe you still could be alive.
I think SOMEONE has found the only way to be truely immortal.
Going into this I didn't expect this to contain one of the best performances I have ever seen in film. Hats off to you, Mr. Carrey. Today was actually the first day I had even heard of this film and I'm so glad I decided to watch it almost immediately after hearing about it for th first time.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
Rarely is a film improved massively by a single element, but Man on the Moon is one of those films. This is a 5/10 movie with a 10/10 performance. The film itself is a mess, it's scattershot, uneven, and not as inventive as it seemingly thinks it is. But Jim Carrey is amazing.
Carrey's performance is meticulous and precise, his acting makes every moment as enigmatic and as memorable as Kaufman himself. Carrey captures doubts, eccentricities, and beliefs as a grand canvas of personality. I'll say it before and I'll say it again, Jim Carrey is truly one of the greatest actors alive even if his career has dwindled into pretty much nothing. Around the turn of the century he…
Less a movie than a collection of (excellent) reenactments but at least it ditches a lot of standard biopic structure.
Originally I was finally going to get around to watching Man on a Wire, which I've been putting off watching for a while now, and when I went to search it up on Netflix I saw this as well. As you can tell, I choose to watch this instead. That was a very wise decision.
When I started watching this I expected another Jim Carrey goofy comedy, but instead was rewarded with a well crafted dark comedy based on the late Andy Kaufman. Carrey does a fantastic job portraying Kaufman, and I don't think any other actor could have played the part as well. The rest of the supporting cast also does a great job. One of my favorite things…
I knew nothing about Andy Kaufman before watching Man on the Moon, so it served as a fascinating introduction to his life and work. This film definitely seems more interested in recreating Kaufman’s greatest hits and capturing his essence than in exploring him as a person or probing the motivation behind his work. It’s uncomfortable, unpredictable, and occasionally brilliant, just as it presents its subject. As a non-Kaufman fan, this worked for me, but if you like him already, then I’m not sure this film does much at all.
Jim Carrey seems like Jim Carrey but does not feel like Jim Carrey — I think this is definitely in his top three performances (along with Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine). He carries this film to its peaks, and if someone worse had been cast, I don’t think the movie would work at all. This is a great film if you’re interested in comedy history and if you like Jim Carrey.
Jim Carrey stars as cult entertainer Andy Kaufman in this biographical comedy-drama about his life, directed by Miloš Foreman from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, with Danny DeVito, Courtney Love and Paul Giamatti in supporting roles.
Carrey manages to completely disappear into the role, and gives an amazing performance that came from never breaking character on set, spot on in capturing the mannerisms and personality of his comedy hero. The film is a great look at Kaufman and his elaborate practical jokes, with Alexander and Karaszewski once again exploring the life of an offbeat and unconventional figure after Ed Wood and The People vs Larry Flynt.
Many people from the time play themselves, including wrestler Jerry Lawler (who…
"So you just pretend to be an asshole?" -Lynn,
Biopics are so boring.
So it turns out that I don't really care for the comedy approach of Andy Kaufman so it resulted in me finding much of this film annoying and/or aggravating and/or boring. It's an intensely standard biopic for a film about someone who was anything but standard and I feel like that's a missed opportunity. Yes, I do believe that Jim Carrey does a pretty good job in the role but he couldn't manage to make me find Kaufman endearing in any way. I wish this film had been about something in addition to just describing what happened in someone's life. It needed a passionate statement it was making about art or life and I didn't get any of that. I found it pretty bad.
Not for me, but Kaufman fans likely will enjoy.
Tony Clifton is the best muppet show character
Man on the Moon is bizarre, funny (and unfunny purposely), but also unexpectedly moving and beautiful.
It’s somewhat more fascinating because of the documentary Jim & Andy. Don’t have much else to say, because it’s “just” a well executed by-the-books biopic, whether that’s actually good or not.
I think it’s pretty great!
