Synopsis
Parallel lives of two couples destined to suicide, one, and unhappiness, the other.
1968 ‘Marie pour mémoire’ Directed by Philippe Garrel
Parallel lives of two couples destined to suicide, one, and unhappiness, the other.
Zwei Paare, Marie pour mémoire,
This is far from major Garrel, but it is a fascinanting auteurist object. Far more narrative (or what passes for it in a Garrel movie) than his post May 68/pre L'Enfant Secret period, yet the notion of performing life and faces remain very close to it, while some of the articulations suggest his 80s work. Godard's influence are all over it, but the carful composed images already suggest Garrel's own.
Engaging godardian flick, a schizophrenic, distopic take on society's political structure and a deranged reimagining of religion, chanted with mad prophetic tones. The idealism of morality and marxism finding their ways between philosophical discourse and poetic visual prowess.
("Pour mémoire" in French actually means "for the record.")
Philippe Azoury on the film, as quoted on the back of the Blu-ray/DVD package from Re:Voir —
"MARIE POUR MÉMOIRE, beginning with its religious yet impious title, depicts the woman in a biblical hodge-podge that would drive any theologian to suicide: Mary is blended with Mary Magdalene, Jesus is confused with Joseph, and they're all incestuous lovers. Everything is flipped around and out of place: the schizophrenic children of Marx and Coca-Cola grab the Holy Scripture by the throat, amidst a pop chaos worthy of Martial Raysse. Garrel never read the Bible. He dreamed up a Holy Trinity as he saw it in the Louvre — a mystification of Christ built…
