It's so good, but I would never EVER recommend people watch it. Stay away from this movie at all costs.
it's like that spongebob episode in which squidward drops a sofa on his foot and it excruciatingly pulls his toenail off except it's 99 minutes long

Roger Ebert, the patron saint of many a film lover, was well known for being fundamentally inclined against a certain stripe of horror film. Not against horror of the classical or psychological variety—The Bride of Frankenstein, Psycho, and Rosemary’s Baby were not objects of his disdain. Not even, necessarily, against modern or graphic horror—his Great Movies series included films such as Se7en, Alien, and The Shining. i don't even know how to rate this. i don't even know what to say. i'm in absolute shock, terrified to my core. i don't know what i was expecting, but it wasn't that. pure horror. i'm gonna have nightmares tonight.
Some of the technical elements don’t hold up as well the second time, but others shine. I was expecting to like it a lot less on rewatch but I found it to be similarly effective and somewhat less frustrating (although I’m still not a fan of the excruciating torture scenes in the last act). Would still recommend for horror fans who can withstand some pretty extreme imagery and themes.
Martyrs seems to be the goto film whenever someone mentions the new wave of French extreme horror, so imagine my surprise when I found out it sucks. The film is really three films for the price of one. There's a home invasion film, and a ghost story, and a pretentious, pseudo-philosophical bullshit story about a quest for the state of euphoria some people feel after they've been tortured long enough. Yay! Something for everybody, except those of us who enjoy coherent filmmaking, and crave more than a pompous justification for endless scenes of misogyny.
