Mary Shelley is braver than the US marines for being a goth who married a prep. Percy Shelley you a bitch
Mary Shelley was a complex woman. She was interesting and had strong opinions and believed in her values. This is not Mary Shelley, and frankly, I'm sick and tired of these fairytale versions of actual people and events.
Do these people think that we, the audience, can't connect with, and empathize with a person with complicated, real emotions? Do they think we can't understand the sometimes differing moral values of a person from a different time?
Mary Shelley and her boyfriend waited around for his wife to commit suicide so that Mary could take her place. That's an interesting love story if I've ever heard one. She and Percy had conflicting political views, and responded harshly to each other's writings…
mary shelley was hardcore, she fucked on her mother's grave and wrote about monsters, this is not the movie she would have wanted
mary shelley did not write frankestein and basically create science fiction for elle fanning to wander around foggy locations in restrictive clothing
How do you make a biopic about a woman who lost her virginity on her mother's grave boring?
I feel like I've learned absolutely nothing about Mary Shelley after watching this.
mary shelley complete GOTHIC BADASS, who lost her virginity on her mother’s grave, wrote frankenstein at 18 and kept her dead husband's heart in a drawer wrapped in poetry - deserves better than this
That scene where Shelley (Douglas Booth, FUCK what great casting) tries to tell Mary (Elle Fanning, who I wanted to dislike in this role as I haven't cared for her in most of her projects but who ultimately won me over--I think Emma Jensen's script has a lot to do with it) that she should change Frankenstein's creature to an "angel" to make it more "hopeful" is such classic, typical fuckboy behavior I sort of writhed in my seat. The way men pretend they don't hurt women never ceases to stagger. It was perfect.
I wish Al-Mansour had included the fact that Mary kept Percy's calcified heart in a silken shroud and carried it with her for the rest of…
There are a lot of things this movie captures with a stunning performance from Elle Fanning. Mary went through a lot of tough things: loss, betrayal, grief, hurt, and brief moments of fleeting joys. Enjoying Haifaa al-Mansour's film Wadjdia, I definitely wanted to check this out.
Slight parallels can be found with people scoffing at Mary Shelley's ability as a woman and al-Mansour's struggles making her first film in Saudi Arabia, facing extreme limitations because of the attitudes and laws concerning her gender. Haifaa al-Mansour even noted this in the Q&A.
