  Genuinely confused by the reaction to this one? I found it to be a fantastic update of the Medusa myth for a hyperaestheticized culture, with Nocturama-esque visuals and some genuinely trippy sequences. Idk. Maybe I'm just Brazilian cinema's personal bitch, but I really think there's a side of horror Twitter that'll eat this up

  We all know the name Medusa: a being of Greek mythology with venomous snakes in place of hair and whose gaze turns men to stone. Some scholars believe she was born with this appearance and power, while others say she was once a beautiful maiden who was changed into a monster by Athena as punishment for desecrating her temple after being assaulted by Poseidon. But who really is the monster? That's a question pondered in writer-director Anita Rocha da Silveira's latest film, one where the Medusas and Athenas of the world are in constant battle.

  "Medusa" é a segunda distopia brasileira relacionada à invasão evangélica em espaços de poder e política dos últimos cinco anos, o que mostra muito bem a situação preocupante do nosso país. Infelizmente, apresenta muitos dos mesmos problemas que o seu antecessor espiritual, "Divino Amor".

  A impressão é de um filme repleto de ideias, mas tão repleto que nem tudo cabe dentro do roteiro. Com isso, vai acumulando e abandonando coisas. Apresenta uma personagem no início como se fosse a protagonista, depois a esquece totalmente. Faz o mesmo com pessoas, temas, lugares, situações. Falta foco, falta saber sobre o que se deseja falar, falta entender exatamente qual é o caminho a se seguir.

  Ainda mais frustrante é a falta de inventividade…

  MEDUSA is a trippy, thought-provoking & thematically loaded condemnation of evangelical religious extremism & the misogyny it places on women. Satirical & visually dazzling. I think a good twenty minutes could’ve been cut but I very much had a blast falling under its spell.

  Brazil’s Christo-Fascists Neon Demon.
  Nice feminist horror, A24 vibes, giallo thriller elements and art-house ambiguity, visually stunning. But the pacing is a bit slack, and the film does feel unnecessarily extended at over two hours.

  It is stronger on mood than character which might feel odd for a movie that tries to remain this commited to a subjective experience, but highlights that Medusa is better felt than written. There's something quite effective on Silveira's threatening framing that makes her attempts to crack it open more powerful. The external scene in particular work while the hospital ones are the weakest perhaps because they are the most out of it. I like how the horror elements ultimate less move ahead its dystopic wotld than operate against.

  In einem Brasilien der nahen Zukunft ist die Säkularisierung aufgehoben und die Kirche regiert den Staat.
  Die Mädchengruppe „Michele and The Treasures of the Lord“ singen tagsüber Propagandalieder (schon herrlich, auf die Musik von „House oft the Rising Sun“ den Text „Ich wünsche mir eine bescheidene, brave Hausfrau zu werden“ zu singen), schmachten die Jungen der Wehrsportgruppe an und posten Videos wie die „10 Tipps für ein christliches Selfie“ (nie von unten (das ist die Perspektive des Teufels), nie von oben (wir maßen uns doch nicht an, die Perspektive Gottes einzunehmen). Nachts setzen sie sich jedoch Masken auf und machen Jagd auf „Sünderinnen“.

  Der Film taucht diese alptraumhafte Welt in Neonlicht und Pastellfarben, legt einen coolen Synthie-Score über diese ästhetischen…
