Part of Scumbalina’s list of Neon Boogers.
I grew up watching Nick at Nite back when almost everything on Nick at Nite was black and white. I loved Mr. Ed, the Patty Duke Show, the whole shebang. I never once thought, "I wish these shows had more tentacles," but if I had, my wish would have come true with Meet the Hollowheads.
I loved this movie, and I'm sure it helped that its director usually worked as a special-effects makeup artist. The sets and props felt as central to the story as the characters, but the actors all delivered solid, appropriately over-the-top performances.
The bizarre, unexplained nature of the Hollowheads's world left me feeling unsettled, but that's not a bad thing. I never know what to call it, but I dig the whole 'creepy '50s aesthetic, and this is a souped-up example.
For fans of the gross but endearing.
