At a time when each new Liam Neeson action thriller has become utterly indistinguishable from the last, Martin Campbell’s “Memory” would at least seem to have a unique hook: In this one, the lanky Irishman plays a contract killer who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Surely that should be enough to help the latest page in the Redbox chapter of Neeson’s career stand out from the likes of “The Ice Road,” “The Marksman,” and the rest of the post-“Taken” glut.
Mix in Monica Bellucci as the Jeffrey Epstein-esque queenpin of a child prostitution ring, Guy Pearce — no stranger to stories about anterograde amnesia — as a mustached FBI agent prone to wearily saying things like “Memory’s a motherfucker,” and pliable…
Memory is brought to you by the director of Casino Royale, Martian Campbell…but hell, you wouldn’t think so. I’ll have no memory of this in the morning.
With the film's poor reviews upon its initial release, I was anticipating something dreadful, but instead got something underwhelming and deceptive. While its true Neeson is in the film, one could argue that, at the end of the day, this is more of a Guy Pearce movie. B oth Liam and Guy are doing well in their roles, with Liam essentially operating on autopilot. Martin has a gift for making even the most poor writing interesting and occasionally exhilarating, however the filmmaker is no God and can't make things happen out of thin air, and with a story as derivative and sloppy as this, there's not much you can do. The concept itself is intriguing, but I believe it was not realized to its full potential.
All in all, you might enjoy it on a Sunday afternoon when you have nothing better to do, but nothing more.

It's interesting to witness the entire life cycle of a major political issue. Take, for example, the U.S. border crisis and the "kids in cages" we heard so much about a few years ago. We don't hear about it much anymore from politicians, but the subject is central to Liam Neeson's latest action movie. The main villain is Monica Bellucci as a high-powered El Paso businesswoman who owns the camps, which her Hunter Biden-esque failson is using as a private harem. I have almost no memory of MEMORY which is fascinating considering I saw it only three days ago. That should tell you all you need to know about the latest Liam Neeson-led action film. What makes it all the more disappointing is we know director Martin Campbell is capable of so much better than this. Lazy, confusing & emotionally dull.

So, I went into this expecting that they were going to take the cerebral Belgian original, which I happened to enjoy, and dumb it down into a generic all-American shoot ‘em up.
But I couldn’t have been more wrong.
What they actually did was take an already complicated film and turned it into overly complicated mess of a movie that completely dilutes and melts down everything that made the original interesting.
It’s like watching a paint-by-numbers picture that’s being attempted by a toddler with a blow torch.
Frankly, the end result is such a convoluted snooze-fest that I find myself wishing that they’d actually gone with the generic an all-American shoot ‘em up option instead.

If I wanted to watch a tall boomer with memory problems smack people around, I'd simply return my father's phone calls.
I mean, you can only go up after Blacklight, right? Bellucci is sleepwalking through this.
I was real interested in this because of its beginnings as a Brian De Palma/Al Pacino project, I guess I was hoping to catch some trace of what that might have been like here. Can't say I was satisfied on that count, but Martin Campbell is no slouch at making well-worn genre material seem fresh and new, and this is anchored by a really impressive, heartfelt Liam Neeson performance. Guy Pearce manages to justify his own involvement over and above its allusion to his work in Memento, and Taj Atwal is pretty good too. The heavy subject matter keeps this from being a real thrill ride but it's effective for what it is.

This a remake of the obscure (but excellent) The Memory of a Killer (2003), which is based on a Belgian novel by Jef Geeraerts. As expected, this is another bland action film for Liam Neeson’s lineup of basic action movies. It had so much potential with an intriguing source material but it never lives up to it with poor acting, underutilized characters, terrible sound mixing, generic action sequences and an overlong runtime. It’s devoid of nearly all of the great qualities from the original film and all the more reason to just go watch that. It’s currently only available as physical media but it’s certainly worth tracking down.
