Ladies and gentlemen, England will be playing Four Four fucking Two.
Watched this as all the news of the bullshit Super League unravelling was coming out. Perfect. One of my favourites of all time.
How much can change in a day, eh?
a few weeks from now i’ll be watching this after england have crashed out of the world cup to try and extract a hint of joy out of football. only thing that makes me proud to be british is mike bassett screaming ENGLAND WILL BE PLAYING FOUR FOUR FUCKING TWO!!! better manager than southgate
This mockumentary absolutely nails its take on the travails of the England football team over the years, but I think it transcends that: it's also, viewed from this vantage point (or more accurately, abyss), a celebration of the turn of the millennium, a time of general merrymaking and innocence in a Britain that had shaken off Thatcher and the uncertain 90's and seemed bound for an era of decency and prosperity. Of course, the film itself is of that era, so it's not a conscious portrayal. But it's impossible to watch it now and not ride the emotional rollercoaster known as nostalgia. So along with the spoiler alert comes a Brit alert, and also a less strident football (soccer) alert.…
An absolute 'Harry Maguire smashing his noggin through it to make us comfortable in a knockout game' of a film.
The Ted Lasso series comes close to capturing what we see as the comedy of an American perspective of football, but Mike Bassett stands alone as the daddy of mocking our own view of the beautiful game. Ireland the England b-team, Benson and Hedges, every Pele appearance and of course - "por favor, two pints of lager and a pair of flamin' sambucas". It's genius 😂
Soon it will be Sir Gareth Southgate and England will play 4-2-3-fucking-1!
The Movember 2022 Challenge #8 👨
"And what would your father say if he could see you now?.....Oh, he'd probably quote Kipling or something, 'Walk with kings and all that' You see, he was like a father figure to me.....Well, obviously..."
Norwich City manager Mike Bassett turns his back on Delia Smith to accept the poisoned chalice that is the England managers job. A documentary crew follows his efforts to get a flailing England team to the World Cup Finals in Brazil.
Did I laugh? Probably enough to be favourable about it. The quote up top is perhaps an example of the problem, with it often not trusting its audience to get the joke. I will say the Benson and…
“I’m a firm believer that if you score one goal, the other team have to score two to win.”
Absolutely hilarious all the way through, I couldn’t stop laughing. Shame such an entertaining film has a god awful poster that may steer people away.
Really great stuff though, especially if you love the footie!!
"Ladies and gentlemen, England will be playing 4 4 fucking 2!!!"

movie was so impactful that I spent an hour fixing my ps4 so that I could play fifa
My Sean Dyche Burnelyball resurgence will take the lads back to the promise lands.
Proper Brexit Geezer oiiiiiii 🏴🍺
A mate reminded me recently of Mike Bassett: England Manager, a movie I hadn't seen in many a year, but one I had fond memories of from my youth for several reasons. One, I've always been a football fan and keen follower of the England national team in particular and two, I've always been a solid Ricky Tomlinson fan and tend to believe he increases the funny significantly in almost everything he's in. Time, of course, sometimes makes things a little more halcyon and better remembered than they deserved to be, and you often look back and find the sheen has gone... so it's a delight to say that's really not the case at all with Mike Bassett. It remains…
Both a satire of English football, as well as a live action drama of my last Football Manager save.
"It's on me head, son. Not off me head, son" .
Keith Allen should always write the England team's anthems. Even this piss-take was better than Ant and fucking Dec that year.
