Mike Birbiglia, again, flexes his comedic strength with Thank God for Jokes. This special, in comparison to his last one "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend", mostly skips on the dramatic moral storytelling aspects in order to focus on funnier anecdotes in general.
While I think I prefer the previous special just a teensy-tiny bit more, just because the dramatic moments really resonated with me more, I really enjoyed this special for how clean and tight Birbiglia's set is. I think, more than any other comedian, Mike succeeds at condensing his jokes into the best ones, so nothing is ever a complete swing-and-a-miss and a few are even outside-the-park-homeruns.
Thank God for Jokes is a refined version of Mike's comedy. He blends the quieter presentation of "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" with the funny, clever scattered stories of his first special "What I Should Have Said Was Nothing". An appropriate maturation of his material, even if I wouldn't call it my favorite.
