A woman's child is kidnapped and killed after paying the ransom. 15 years later, a mysterious figure is seen visiting the site of killing and another kidnapping occurs using the same methods. The woman teams up with a detective to catch the killer once and for all.

The cops were a little stupid at parts & the first half seems average but then the twists started coming and it was fucking good.. well worth it
Fifteen years after a kidnapping that ended in murder, the perpetrator reappears at the scene of the crime, only for the statue of limitations to run out. The detective responsible (Kim Sang-kyung, Memories of Murder) resigns from the force, while the victim's mother (Uhm Jung-hwa, Okay! Madam) continues to search on her own. At the same time a young girl is abducted from her grandfather (Song Young-chang, The Foul King), in a case so similar that the officer responsible (Jo Hee-bong) brings the original detective in to consult.
Flashbacks to the original crime highlight the current circumstances, building tension, while playing to the film's title. Director Jeong Keun-seob has made a highly effective thriller, though its modest in its possible…
A promising start is let down by the proceedings becoming more and more contrived.
The comic relief side kick, a highlight from the off, vanishes without a trace and from there on in the film slowly drops in quality. For many more reasons than just that, of course.
The last half an hour drags so much it literally becomes a chore to finish watching.
Kim Sang-kyung (Memories of Murder) is a more than decent actor, but he can't help Montage becoming more than a by the numbers, and I do mean every number, Korean revenge thriller.

"Montage" by the time it ends manages to put itself into the upper echelon of Korean thrillers by keeping itself apart from the gore, forced twists n violence which has been done to death in Korean cinema. The use of time is very interesting in this movie, like an origami. It starts as a plain paper (linear), but takes on elaborate form, & the juxtaposition of two narratives are seamless which keeps the audience guessing throughout
It perfectly delivers 120 minutes of enthralling and surprisingly moving cinema.
A fantastic thriller with a convincing plot, grounded elements of suspense and some great performances but not without flaws n plot conveniences.
Montage is an apt title for the film but Memories of murder would have been much more suitable(which also stars the same lead), only that it was already taken. Talking about the film, what starts as a slow burn investigative thriller becomes so much interesting once the twists start rolling in.
It's rare that we see a strong message in thrillers as such but it was so overwhelming to see how this film did it even within it's limitations. And the blurred moral complex near the end was great and reminded me of Gone baby gone. Moreover the non-linear storytelling helps a lot in maintaining the suspense and keeping the storytelling technique as a secret though giving us a hint…

Kommissar Cheong-ho war mit dem Fall betraut, konnte ihn aber nicht lösen.
Fünf Tage bevor die Verjährungsfrist abläuft, findet er am Todesort des Mädchens eine Blume und folgert, dass sie dort von ihrem Mörder abgelegt wurde. Er folgt der Spur der Blume und setzt alles daran, ihn vor Ablauf der Frist ausfindig zu machen. Als er kurz davor ist aufzugeben, wird ein weiteres Mädchen entführt und die Jagd beginnt erneut.
MONTAGE, deutscher Titel Verjährung, ist ein guter und zum Teil emotional packender Thriller, der es geschickt versteht den Zuschauer bis zum Schluss im unklaren zu lassen und das gefällt mir sehr.

There is a fantastic movie hidden away in here.
Unfortunately, especially when you are watching a mystery, bad writing can be a deal breaker despite the good core idea. Because in a mystery's case, lazy writing can be frustrating as hell to watch.
Like a scene where the killer pulls his van right in front of the cop who's been investigating him. Oh my God! He's rubbing it in his face! Nope. Just bad writing to get to a chase scene.
Or a scene where the cop's partner finds him in a random restaurant out of the blue. He must be in on it! Nope. Just bad writing to cause a distraction.
But wait, the mother of the kidnapped child…
this movie was kind of dumb. the detective labels the suspect as committing "the perfect crime" yet all dude did was steal a backpack and walk in the opposite direction of a crowd. you could literally see him in the frame, 100 metres away from the police . Literally any half competent police force could have caught him , especially since they were all set up for the drop! hahaha
This movie is also very melodramatic with people shouting and crying a lot, and its all played very straight so there's not much laughs to be had on its behalf either.
The central mystery however does keep you guessing and new things keep unspooling , so in that sense it's engaging and watchable enough. Considering its ratings on here and on IMDb though, I would say this is overrated.
Murder mysteries aren't exactly uncommon when it comes to Korean film, nor are ones that play on the statute of limitations. But when they are as well executed as this, it really doesn't matter.
The story itself is relatively simple, but after it rolls past the halfway mark, it twists in fairly unexpected ways to the point where just when you think you have a handle on it all, it throws you another curveball to keep you guessing. Throw in some very tense scenes, a well written script, the expected slick production values and an on point cast (including a SUPERB performance from Uhm Jung-hwa) and you have yourself a winner.
