Yeah, I don't know. I'm gonna try to be as constructive as possible, and say that I laughed at the serious moments and frowned at the comedic moments. My mom just deultory put this on, and I tried to watch it, but in its theme driven storylines, there's something awfully wrong about it. Narrative, this and that, that and this. But still got to appreciate the effort, so yeah. F for Effort.
I haven't written a formal review yet but comedy isn't the first genre that I typically think of when it comes to movies about grief. I interviewed both Jack C. Newell and Marguerite Moreau about the film.
I tried. Sometimes I worry that I am in too deep into movie viewing that I can no loner be objective, but also this had so many amateurish flavor profiles that it was hard to finish.
(Complete disclosure: I've worked on this film as the publicist for its release. I'm biased.) But each time I watch, it grows on me and gets more fulfilling as I accept its quirks and odd rhythms and fall under its gentle little spell. Its story of coping with catastrophic loss and coming to terms with life-altering grief is one that feels unusually compelling and meaningful right now. With some beautiful photography, evocative music and pitch-perfect central performances, it's got a lot to recommend it. You can take it from me. Even though I'm biased!
This is billed as a comedy, but it's just not that funny I say it's a rom-dram written & directed by Jack C Newell. It's from Chicago Media & Black Apple Media & Zaxie.
There are very few films that could possibly get away with using the cremated remains of a spouse as a macguffin, but MONUMENTS not only pulls off that incredibly sardonic feat, but somehow even manages to create a quality comedic road movie around it.
After the sudden, and tragically banal, death of his wife Laura, Steven decides to ignore her family’s generations long traditional of burial on their farmland and instead abscond from Colorado with Laura’s remains to Chicago. His plan is to spread her ashes inside of the Field Museum, the place where he believes they had the happiest moment of their life. Of course, Laura’s family is not okay with this decision, and with the help of Laura’s…
