Slow-moving action thriller. An enigmatic backpacker, Eric, played by Natt Wolff, was detained in Norway after a strange supernatural incident causing a man to go ablaze. He then meets a trusting police-appointed psychologist and turns to her for aid. It's a more grounded way of telling these types of superhuman stories. The performances, tone, and visual effects were decent. Pacing however was a bit wobbly. And it had an overambitious ending. It’s not a bad film. There's enough to appreciate for a single watch.
That bridge sequence is absolutely stunning but the film stops so abruptly and with no closure it kind of feels like a waste of time.

Mortal is an interesting take on the modern superhero origin story, but the intentions are for it to be more of a lore-filled Norwegian Fantasy. Either way, the film feels like a missed opportunity of sorts. Nat Wolff is competent-enough as an actor to handle this sort of role, and he’s genuinely good as our quiet but deadly protagonist. In terms of relatability and character-progression, there isn’t much to latch onto at first, but we are slowly introduced to a few individuals that he begins to trust. The issue here is lack of a captivating story, as we have seen this exact story many times before. Mortal needed to embrace the…
Definitely not your average super hero origin story. It is not a Mavel or DC big budget flick with lots of special effects and famous actors, this is an down to earth, basic and simple story. The story is great with actors that give their all to make it a great movie. Worth watching.
Andre Ovredal continues to show us why he is an awesome filmmaker to keep your eye on. He gave us Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and now he has blessed us with Mortal. An origin story for a superpowered man that can rival anything Marvel or DC is trying to do. I was interested from moment one and it just kept getting better. I needed to know what was going on and he just kept learning cool new things about himself. I wasn't disappointed by the story at all and the visuals throughout are fantastic. The helicopter crash and the bridge scene were both awesome. My only real gripe is that…
Mortal.
This movie is just about A guy who has a Power and a girl who is helping him and let me tell you it’s boring as hell
You can breathe easy now, Alan Taylor. You're no longer the director of the worst Thor movie.
“I think something happened that nobody quite understands yet.”
an odd step back for Andre Øvredal who’s worked very nicely in the horror genre for his past three films ranging from found footage to YA. but this take on norse mythology, or more specifically the rebirth of Thor is just utterly mundane (or should i say... mortal) and the most boring way it could’ve gone. shamefully so if i may put it like that, because the effects are really good and the first half has an ominously dark and hostile scandinavian flair going that i like.
something about the norwegian language & quietude and aerial shots of the isolated nature of the north just hits different amiright. until they start talking…

A.V. Club review. Spent the entire movie thinking "This can't possibly be going where it looks like it's going," yet still burst out laughing when it did in fact finally arrive there.
