fucked up. has a titanic performance from Garrett Hedlund, maybe the best of his career. messed me up to a similar extent as Unsane, although the unrelenting fear of that film is replaced by something far more achingly tragic. I wish things were easier in life, so many people get torn apart irrevocably by this world.
Aptly titled, that’s for sure. Quite possibly Soderbergh's most complex project to date. Nothing is what it seems and everything is possible. A choose-your-own-adventure style thriller that’s both mind-boggling and intellectually stimulating in equal measure. Look away for one second and this entire work of narrative art will collapse before your eyes.
Mudbound, Billy Lynn, Mosaic - Garrett Hedlund is becoming a thing.
This is to Peak TV what Bubble is to film. I am only halfway through the HBO series edition but the biggest takeaway I have about Mosaic is how Soderbergh applies his typical formal efficiency to the casting. The guy literally creates magic with peanuts. You could stick him on a desert island with a tin can and a coconut and he'd probably still be able to make a stylish movie and - as he's done with Channing Tatum - really make you think, "gee that coconut can act."

Steven Soderbergh on top form. Incredibly depressing that this will be forgotten while everyone lauds Bandersnatch as the next great innovation in entertainment.
Soderbergh innovates the structure of storytelling by having you, the viewer, decide how it will be told. Why it isn’t the most original piece of art (film? TV? Idk) it certainly grabbed me with how I decided to view the events of the story. Great performances and extremely inventive cinematography gives life to Mosaic. I’d love to see more people experiment with this type of format.
Behind Show Me a Hero as the best HBO miniseries of the decade; certainly the most overlooked one, as I've never met a single other person who's seen it. I watched the app version back when it first came out, and loved the concept, though the completionist in me didn't really experience it as intended—it's designed so you follow specific character paths in a linear fashion, and I suppose you're either meant to be content with seeing a piece of the puzzle out of context, or, like me, you just watch every single available branch, destroying any sense of pacing or tension.
Either way, I thought it was solid in that form—sufficiently engaging, even when I'm actively ruining the pacing…
For what feels like forever, Steven Soderbergh has been talking about the nexus of art and commerce. And to go by his work, it's a shadowy labyrinth where he's toiled for seedy backroom business men who hold the whole damn system in their hand, giving it well-timed squeezes to extract everything they want. But before Mosaic gets there, it's a story of investigative procedure and its fastidious practitioners. This miniseries was originally released in kooky fashion with an experiment choose your own adventure structure. For the bluray, Soderbergh resequenced the show's segments to worm through the layers of the mystery, constantly toggling how much or how little the viewer really knows.

I'm not totally convinced this justifies its existence in addition to its original interactive form, but six hours of Soderbergh is pretty much inevitably a good thing.
This is more worthwhile an example of "cinema" than most things I've viewed thus far in 2018 / Sharon Stone called it an "interactive movie" on her Facebook and Twitter pages so fuck you I'm counting it as a movie.

Il a fallu que je réajuste mes attentes plusieurs fois en regardant ça, d'abord avec le premier épisode qui annonce le meurtre mais se plonge dans un long flashback qui place les enjeux, les affaires d'argent et de propriétés qui obsèdent Soderbergh, et c'est pas avant le milieu du deuxième épisode qu'on arrive au meurtre.
