To watch Mr. Mom is to willfully engage in an act of cognitive dissonance. On one hand, you’ve got Michael Keaton in fine form, wryly bringing John Hughes’ screwball antics to life and surely putting a smile on even the toughest customer’s face. In perpetually cozy TBS sheen, no less! On the other hand, you’ve got a font of Reagan-era, right-wing thought baked into the text: corporate culture as an aspirational positive, traditional gender roles at their most regressive and binary, and a warped obsession with the nuclear family so great that all adults existing outside the household must be regarded as agents of temptation, intent and hellbent upon breaking Mom and Dad up. All movies are “of their time.” Mr. Mom is its time.
Succeeding both as a universally enjoyable comedy and an endearing document of its era, the John Hughes-scripted, Micheal Keaton-starring "Mr. Mom" is fully appealing piece of work. A domestic and economic comedy, the film offers a well-composed and well-cast observation of family, gender roles, business, and consumerism in the Reagan years. It is a bubbly romp whose waters may run deeper than assumed.

This is the movie that launched Michael Keaton’s career and it has not aged well. Keaton’s character becomes a stay-at-home husband after being laid off at work. Perhaps back in the 80s it was funny to watch how incompetent men are in carrying out even the simplest task of grocery shopping, laundry, picking up and dropping the kids at school.
The jokes may be dated but it’s still an entertaining watch.

Ok, so this is like a funny comedy and a classic and everything (I mean John Hughes wrote it), but like, this is also an interesting commentary of gender roles in the Reagen era. The 80s were definitely a majorly masculine time, but also were a time when women started to work in the workplace more and were more respected and, from what my dad said, there was a lot of discussion about gender roles and the like in the 80s. This feels like a good commentary on it, with it showing Michael Keaton start to fulfill the roles and stereotypes of being a mother, and Teri Garr filling the roles and stereotypes of a working father.
