max landis actually needs to be stopped. poor imitation of 90s-hitman-pulp meets cutesy-sundance-bullshit meets shane black that opens with a particularly ghastly meghan trainor song & just slowly gets worse from there -- so torturously unfunny, poorly-directed & tone-deaf it almost retroactively made me appreciate Deadpool. landis' idea of character is how many specific (and weirdly dated) quirks & tics he can give actors to overact with. it genuinely feels like he has an algorithm of how many they have to have & how often they have to appear.
meanwhile cabezas' utter lack of anything resembling kinetic energy kills the only glimmer of an idea here. kendrick & rockwell admirably work triple time to convince you that there's something happening underneath their human shell of quirks (the…
I’m probably rating this way too high but I’ll be damned this was honestly such a fun movie.
I’ll admit though that a third of the way through, it lost its charm a little bit/its shtick got a little old. But still a super fun movie.
Anna Kendrick comparing Sam Rockwell to a “sexy Rain Man” had me fricken dying of laughter.
His MO of wearing a clown nose was funny too.
Took me longer than I’d like to admit to recognize him but Tim Roth was awesome too.
I also had no idea that Steve was played by RZA until the end credits. Nuts.
I dug the title sequence. And the soundtrack throughout the movie was awesome.
