Even though I've been there--more than once--I have a hard time relating to romantic characters who can't find the gumption to tell someone how they feel, especially straight male characters. Usually this is because the character is a nerd stereotype so unlike a real human being that it's shocking anyone can relate to them, and sometimes it's because their affection is just creepy and weird, masculinist idiocy. And sometimes, I'm just a jerk. But the point is, when I do manage to connect with the individual in that situation, it has a strong impact.

I’ll profess right off the top that I loved this film. This isn’t a review; it’s just some ramblings about my thoughts right after seeing it.

I haven’t read any reviews or comments here yet, but I think there could be a lot of people who would be angered at this film as being a trite class statement. As I started watching it, that was an opinion that I was forming myself.

As the film unfolded, I began to lose that sentiment. I think of it more as a love letter to the city, and a statement of reality about the division of those who built it, and make it work, and those who inhabit it and reap it’s benefits.…

Dhobi Ghat is essentially a love letter to the city of Mumbai. I don't know an awful lot about Mumbai: I haven't been there, nor do I understand the true spirit of it, but it presents this through avenues of romantic feelings which connect its citizens together in a weird concoction of artists, dreamers and gangsters from a variety of classes but all proximately close in some capacity.

It is raining. Hard.
A successful painter is having a celebratory drink. He pushes his glass into the rain from his balcony to add a bit of water, and drinks. On the other side of town, a dhobi returns home to his bedroom. He pushes a pail into the rain on the middle of his bed to prevent it from getting soaked. It is a small scene, an effective scene. Mumbai at its best, Mumbai at its worst.

Once in a while a film will come along that leaves you at a loss of words, grasping at ideas, trying to articulate what you just felt, what you experienced.

Dhobi Ghat is exactly an experience like that. Poetry filmed and edited to resemble cinema. I'll need to study the cinematic art and hone my literary skills a far lot more before I can even begin to attempt reviewing a film such as this. Perhaps this is what results when an artist manages to fully realize their innermost artistic vision of what they set out to create (or discover).

Reminded me so much of the Iranian New Wave cinema, as in how the directors manage to find spellbinding beauty…
