I can't believe how lucky I am to live in a world where this movie exists. One of the most astounding films about introversion I've ever seen, and about independence, communication, social convention, being loved for the role you fill rather than who you are. At times it felt like an introvert horror movie, at times like introvert pornography, and for much of the film I wondered if it was stacking the deck too much in favor of our protagonist. But it celebrates her victories without turning into a one-note empowerment tale and without ever letting her off the hook or making things easy. It leaves room for the possibility that some of her approach may be selfish—although any selfishness…
I'm someone who's asocial, introverted, and who needs copious amounts of solitude. Fortunately, I'm with someone who understands and celebrates this aspect of who I am. We give each other ample space to do our own thing and we're the better for it.
But what if you're stuck in a stifling life situation where your daily routine consists of interacting with people who fail to give you the space and peace that you crave? What if your loved ones are fundamentally disinterested in appreciating who you are as a person due to your needs clashing with normalcy and cultural expectations everyone demands you to uphold?

This film centres around middle aged Manana. She lives in a household full to bursting with a family living all over one another. Her overbearing mother in particular is incredibly draining. Manana has no space, no time to herself and no peace. Her identity is subsumed within the collective of the household.
One day she rents an apartment, packs her bags and moves out. She refuses to give a reason to her family. Perhaps, it is not something she can articulate even to herself. There is a difference between solitude and loneliness. Manana wants- needs solitude, but loneliness comes from the realization that those closest to her can't seem to fathom this need. Hardly anyone is willing to give her the physical or mental space she needs to be her own person. They seem to only care about her "problems" if it disrupts their lives or reputation. She is seen as a mother, a wife, a daughter- not an individual with her own desires and needs and contentment. She is simultaneously the backbone holding together an entire family but also apparently incapable of taking care of herself. It's a really moving portrait of what it's like to be an introvert and rediscovering your own self after years of living for other people.

I think that directors Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Groß really, really love Three Colors: Blue. This is a film about a woman leaving trouble and family behind in order to start life over in a new apartment. Lead actress Ia Shugliashvili even looks like an older, more beleaguered Juliette Binoche, and many of her mannerisms and downcast expressions look learned from Binoche in Blue. The importance of music to her character Manana is not so striking a similarity, but it is one all the same. A major revelation more than halfway through the film comes right on time for the Blue parallel: and it is the same revelation. And then—this might be a stretch, but it crossed my mind—the melancholic…
