Week 32: Queer Underground Films
"Underground films" is a term not used much anymore. But in the late 1950s and 1he 1960s, it was often used to describe the works of independent filmmakers that were more experimental and avante-garde, sometimes focusing on subcultures. Queer directors would include Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith and Andy Warhol.
My Hustler has the skimpiest of plots - not unlike the swimsuit of the bleached blonde male hustler of the title, Paul America, one of Warhol's superstars. The dialogue feels improvised, and it was filmed on Fire Island over Labor Day weekend in 1965.
