oscar bait because
1) surprisingly not the first time the oscars nominated a movie about a human wanting to fuck a fish
2) bait! like the fish
The octopus is one of the only animals I won't eat because of guilt; however I'd have no problem eating this guy, who frames the nature documentary as a sad straight rich white guy story about himself and fits the octopus into a manic pixie dream girl trope to fit his needs.

A mysteriously wealthy documentary filmmaker has something of an emotional breakdown, realizes he's working too hard and neglecting his family, and so he quits, immediately takes up an intense and obsessive daily diving regimen, begins an emotional affair with an octopus, and has someone else film a documentary about him. I'm sure that's really helping you connect with your kid, dude.
Has a lot of really beautiful and fascinating octopus footage but also a lot of really overbearingly portentous voiceover and music. There's a much more interesting documentary here that's either more cognizant of the privilege and emotional dysfunction fueling this guy's crisis or else just about how cool octopuses are, but this ain't it.
