This is set in the world of the Old Masters and offers a mosaic of gripping stories in which unrestrained passion for Rembrandt's paintings leads to dramatic developments and unexpected plot turns.
A person can intensely love (a) painting(s) by Rembrandt or get obsessed by it. In this Dutch documentary, Oeke Hoogendijk portrays a variety of people who who share a lifelong and burning passion for one or more paintings by Rembrandt. They need or want to own as many Rembrant paintings as possible - think of Thomas Kaplan, an American art collector. Some people really think they will discover a new one - or that they have - , such as art dealer Jan Six, member of a dynastic Dutch family. Some want to purchase two masterpieces, such as Rijksmuseum directors Wim Pijbes and Taco Dibbits. Director Hoogendijk shows the political fights between the Dutch and French governments in the purchase…
VIFF 2020: Film #5
This documentary isn’t afraid to follow the threads of one of humankind’s universal questions: do y’all ever just want to fuck a Renaissance painting?
In Frederick Wiseman’s 2014 documentary National Gallery, a belief is repeatedly returned to in the various board meetings shown, that the appeal of the Old Masters will never die. Perhaps it’s that popular appeal that some of the talking heads in My Rembrandt want control over, to take away an image millions flock to national art museums to see and give themselves exclusive access.
I've always felt a bit funny about being a lover of stereotypically "highbrow" Western art, and this documentary only exacerbated that. I couldn't be further from these obscenely wealthy European guys that obsess over 400-year-old portraits of random Dutch people. Thing is, I kind of get it. I love Rembrandt too, and when some of the film's subjects wax poetic about the art, that passion resonates with me. The doc brings some of its subjects down to earth in this way, as to not be completely alienating to watch. The Scottish duke featured in one of the film's less dramatic "plots" may own 80,000 acres of the land around his house, but when he talks about his Rembrandt, I totally…

A delightful movie. This is not about Rembrandt, it is about the owners of Rembrandt paintings and their deep emotional relationships with the paintings. The director captures the tail-end of an era, getting inside the homes of the final few European aristocrats who are just about to sell off the Rembrandts from their ancestral family homes, as well as a young upstart aristocrat who wants to make his Rembrandt expertise into a big splash in the art world. The director's expert timing pays off as the documentary, despite being filmed with no premonition of what was to come, has complete inside access into two or three unexpected incidents. This is a great way to escape the world for an hour and a half.
Interesting little case study of the art world. Men seduced by Rembrandt. Kind of bizarre thinking about how value is created. Obsession seems to fuel this value. Rembrandt is swooned over, and for good reason - he was very good at painting.
Rich people can afford to buy his stuff and often enough, rich people are boring or weird. Some of the men in this seem boring or weird. In particular the American - if you watch it, you’ll know what I mean.
What made this more enjoyable a watch was that this wasn’t merely people talking about Rembrandt, but about why they love him; what he means to them; and what Rembrandt and preserving his work means for the world. What is the point in caring about Rembrandt? This movie might help explain that.
the dutch museum vs. the french museum was the best drama i've seen all year. i do wish there was just a little more bite here - the film is very gentle with its subjects. for example, the drama with jan six definitely felt a little.... sanitised. as a discussion of how elitism and personal conflict relates to the publics understanding and relationship with art.... i found it really interesting. the handling of the art itself was great- i did genuinely feel the weight that is given to these paintings. did a few "wow"'s during the closeups and restorations. i do think the humans surrounding the films gave a fascinating insight into an elitist bubble, but i wish the film pushed them a little harder. you wish the brushstrokes where just a little more calculated (ok that was lame). there's nothing wrong with acknowledging some of the innate absurdism here. an engaging, if imperfect, use of 90 minutes
