ominous movie about a family facing overwhelming struggles in order to survive on an isolated place, where they went after declaring bankrupcy. it shows confidence to explore how suffering casts itself upon we people and disconnect us from any sort of control we think we had on our own surroundings. religion and morals are tools these characters have to cope with it and go on amidst turmoil, not always enough to make them understand it.
it's very early diaz so it's a very low budget movie with poor technical qualities, but still he manages to communicate his thoughts, despite being on a very primal way, filmmaking wise. it should be watched if you're already a lav diaz fan, or even if you're wondering where to start with him, since this one might be the less defying of the bunch, and one of the few that are available online.
