Joe Carnahan's NARC is a gritty & unrelenting, William Friedkin-style police procedural with a powerhouse performance from Ray Liotta and equally good work from Jason Patric. Also the opening sequence is an all-timer!!

2002 Marathon - Film #11
”This job’ll either burn you out or bury you”
Right away you can tell that Joe Carnahan’s having an absolute blast with his ultra-bleak and super gritty 70’s styled cop flick.
Not to mention the fact that Ray Liotta and Jason Patric spend the entire film eyeball to eyeball in a dueling battle of intensity that feels like whoever blinks first is gonna have their throat ripped out.
”It's just me and you, and I am in your shit for the duration!”
A lean, mean motherfucker of a movie. Has to be one of the rawest, bleakest and grittiest cop dramas out there. As if Carnahan time travelled to the seventies to shoot this. Killer opening sequence that immediately sets the tone, Jason Patric comes close to a young Al Pacino and Ray Liotta, well, perhaps he was born for this part. Not stable is putting it mildly. Intimidating is more like it. And highly so. A ticking timebomb from the moment he appears on screen and scarier than most horror monsters. The documentary style gives it authenticity, the dialogue is sharp, it has a modest and thus effective score by none other than Cliff Martinez and the Coolio joke still puts a smile on my face. For me a heavy hitter in the genre. One that makes much of the competition look like kids movies. Poison pussy, man. Fúck.
For me, one of the best cop dramas of the 2000s and along with THE GREY, one of Carnahan’s best. Under appreciated.
No Blu-ray that I know of.

Narc is a highly underrated film. The performances are superb. Ray Liotta's performance in Narc (2002) is second only to his performance in Goodfellas (1990).
Jason Patric gives a performance on par to his performance in Rush (1991).
This is a film that needs to be revisited or seeked out and enjoyed.
You won't be disappointed.
I couldn't begin to describe how influencial this film was to me at age 14. I rented the DVD from Blockbuster for reasons I can't recall. I probably saw a TV spot at some point and was intrigued by the grime of it. This type of gritty cop film was not in my repertoire in the slightest in 2003 when this hit home video. I was already exposed to Training Day but that was a breezy, sunny L.A. "day in the life" compared to Narc. I had not seen a Tarantino film yet. I had not seen Boyz N the Hood. I was on the verge of seeing Goodfellas edited on the A&E channel, so this was my introduction to…
Narc is a high velocity cop thriller set in the cold, dark, gritty dangerous city of Detroit. A cop has been killed and it becomes a case of Who done it.
With excellent performances from Ray Liotta and Jason Patric they kept the intensity full throttle especially Liotta, and an absolute adrenaline boosting opening 10 minutes Narc was a really interesting film that shouldn't be missed.
Excellent cop thriller with brutal raw emotions and a gritty ambience. It quite fast paced as they follow one lead to the next and has several moments that are really intense.. better than I remembered from when I’d first seen it years ago.. holds up well and I’d recommend especially for fans of something like the shield or end of watch..
Though I didn't have to be Nostradamus to have an educated guess at the final reveal, I sure did enjoy the supreme grittiness of this neo-noir's story in getting there.
I've never been a fan of Jason Patric but he was great here and Ray Liotta was in full Ray Liotta mode, two good performances that helped immerse me into such a volatile and grubby, corrupt world. Snappy writing helped them too, lots of talk from both sides of the law that my The Wire-trained brain could tune in to no bother.
These sorts of crime thrillers are few and far between these days, it's a shame. I'm glad I've finally seen it, thanks largely to Steph for reminding me it exists.
With fantastic performances from Ray Liotta and Jason Patric, a top-notch script, and rock-solid direction from Joe Carnahan, Narc is a smart, gripping, gritty police drama that grabs you right from the word go and never lets up.
