The Griswalds win a vacation to Europe on a game show, and so pack their bags for the continent. They do their best to catch the flavor of Europe, but they just don't know how to be be good tourists. Besides, they have trouble taking holidays in countries where they CAN speak the language.

My parents surprised my siblings and I with the prospect of a trip to Europe this summer, our first time outside of North America together, on my father’s sole condition that we watch National Lampoon’s European Vacation, a film from which he’s quoted as long as I’ve been alive (“Look, kids: Big Ben, parliament!” on most family vacations). Because my father is maybe the best man I know, I obliged. National Lampoon's European Vacation is the follow up to Harold Ramis's Vactation. This time it see's the Griswold family win a trip to Europe courtesy of a game-show. The film is directed by Amy Heckerling, and it falls into all the usual sequel tropes, by trying to do the same thing again except to make everything bigger and more exaggerated then the original.
There are some funny moments to be found in this film, even though it resorts to lowest common denominator cultural stereotypes. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo both do good jobs with a limited screenplay. There's just not a great deal to say about this film other then it's a generic 80's comedy sequel that's riding on the coattails of the first films success.
Yes this movie is pretty bad but it does contain the first pair of hoo hoos I have ever seen so that’s a plus.
It doesn't come close to being as clever or funny as its predecessor but thanks to another committed and energetic performance from Chevy Chase, a likable cast and enough funny moments sprinkled throughout, "National Lampoon's European Vacation" manages to be an entertaining enough time to warrant a recommendation. The kids are sadly pretty annoying this time around and the jokes are pretty hit and miss but when they hit, they hit really hard. Not great but I've always enjoyed this and honestly think it's a pretty underrated sequel.
Man those Griswolds sure are jackasses. Chevy frolicking around in lederhosen is simply the best
Der zweite Teil der Griswold-Reihe kommt an den ersten bei weitem nicht heran. Es fehlt ein bisschen der Charme und der Witz des Vorgängers. Es gibt dafür einige nette Gastauftritte von z.B. Eric Idle, Moon Zappa oder Willy Millowitsch (!) zu sehen. Doch die Situationen und Gags wirken nicht sehr sorgfältig arrangiert und zünden nicht immer. Die Locations sind wieder recht interessant, auch wenn hier noch stärker als im ersten Teil, Klischees über Einheimische zum Gegenstand von Gags gemacht werden. So sind in England fast nur Punks zu sehen, die Franzosen sind Diebe und verachten Amerikaner und die Deutschen (die Szenen wurden übrigens ins Brixxen, Südtirol gedreht) prügeln sich nach dem Schuhplattlern regelmäßig. Und dann soll Clark auch noch gehängt…
