Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is another masterful work from Hayao Miyazaki, presenting a story that truly hits you right in the feels. His take on a post-apocalyptic world covered by wastelands and a poisonous forest called Sea of Decay with giant insects inhabiting it is just so peculiar and wildly imaginative. I loved all the rich mythology involved and how Nausicaä has a genuinely powerful bond with the creatures as well as nature itself. She is such a kind, fierce and caring protagonist that you feel attached to the character right from the start. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manages to deliver an incredible sense of awe while also having a beautiful and touching message so I could not recommend it highly enough!

Respect for nature, strong female characters, soft and relieving sense of humor, stories about sacrifice and miracle and the cathartic nature of creativity and imagination. These are Hayao Miyazaki’s favorite elements, he mixes these with his incredibly endless creativity and artistic vision and creates films which are aesthetically stunning and thematically touching, his films reflect the modern world’s regret and guilt but Miyazaki’s optimistic approach to stories which are dark and melancholic in nature make his refreshing and inspiring. I don’t know what to say…this is a wonderful, beautiful film about the world-changing power of kindness and compassion, and of the eternal dangers of arrogance, hubris and greed. It’s a modern fable, and I’m annoyed with myself that it has taken me this long to watch it.
Miyazaki's most hellish vision of nature's ability to push back against the waste and ruin of Man. Eden as a vision of paradise lost: an unspeakably beautiful world utterly fatal to humans. The minutiae of the film is so fascinating: the careful documentation of Nausicaa dumping a shotgun shell around the eye of a hardened, giant bug and sparking a flame to loosen the lens, the way that living Ohms move with the segmented, undulating motion of caterpillars. Its sense of scale is exquisite, and the use of both horizontal and vertical space to de-emphasize the importance of people against a world that has evolved past them is suitably unnerving. And through it all, hope shines, finding in its heroine a figure seeking to find the balance for man and nature to coexist without one killing the other. My favorite Miyazaki.
when the lights came up a young woman in the row behind me let out this very loud scream-wail-sob, i whipped around in shock because i honestly thought a small child was being murdered or having some kind of panic attack, but no, she just lifted her head and moaned "oh my goddddd", and while i don't condone or comprehend that outlandish behavior in public, i understand
