A very well done film, but it didn't really seem to his those emotional punches for me. It looked great, if not very stylistic, and I loved the way the sci-fi elements and information was kept at an arm's length. But the main problem here is that the big beats that should grip us just... don't. The characters are great, but the romance isn't entirely gripping, nor does it feel like something I want to invest my time in. It's just there to give the story drama and emotional backbone.
It's a fantastic concept, with so many thematic layers that could be explored, but they never decide to go the interesting route. It feels like an overly long Black Mirror episode - great concept, but a Charlie Booker spin wouldve added something more I think. Alex Garland had a fine script, but it only touched on the best parts waiting just below the surface.
