Yoru wa mijikashi aruke yo otome, The Maiden Galaxy, 夜短夢長, 少女前進吧!, The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl
Perhaps the only film ever to include a pub crawl, a 10 minute musical number, a natural disaster sequence, an army of cowboys fighting a crowd of politicians, a slav squad, and still somehow be pretty coherent and unironically amazing.
Y'ALL
i had the shittiest of days and watching this movie cleared my mind and probably added 10 years to my life expectancy
I want to live in Masaaki Yuasa's wacky incomprehensible gorgeous life-affirming world
A movie about a woman who understands that the three most important things in life are drinking, used books, and experimental musical theatre.
Reviewed as part of my Japan Cuts coverage.
an absolute blast, imagine just walking around town getting absolutely plastered and going to a used book market held at night, now that's the fucking dream lads
A 93 minute ode to youth and its boundless potential. There's not much else to say really. It almost feels like a disservice to talk about this at all it just has to be experienced
Rather than trying to control fate, ride it, see where the wind takes you, and then land spectacularly. Rather than trying to capture a rose colored dream, focus on what is real and look around, there are so much more reality has to offer, a larger variety of colors both bright and dull and never boring, mixed together like vodka and cranberry juice. The possibility of failures and the promise of missed opportunities in life are just as important as the comfort and security a perfectly square, 4.5 tatami room has to offer. Don't just lie there, seize what is dangling in front of you, venture out into the night, make mistakes, walk on.

literally everything about this film is gorgeous - from the yuasa's incredible exaggerated animation, to the surreal soundscape and score / soundtrack, and the hilarious ensemble of unforgettable characters.
so much care and enthusiasm was put into every single frame of this and it shows.
i love it all so, so much.
“The Night is Short, Walk on Girl” is a surrealist explosion of light and life that perishes bleak nihilism into the recesses of the netherworld.
Maasaki Yuasa’s film has the sensation of walking into a nightclub, where - in every corner, there is a musician playing on different instrument and in a unique style. Together, the sound combines into a cacophony of passion.
“Girl” takes place over one evening in Kyoto. A soon-to-be college student with the superpower of unlimited alcohol tolerance sets off on an odyssey to drink in the vivacity of the city.
Sharing the ethos of Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round,” Yuasa’s work sees alcohol with the potential use as a lubricant for social stimulation. As the cocktails…
The best musical/pub crawl/second hand bookshop centred/cold epidemic/odyssey hybrid I've ever seen.
