also, this imdb trivia hurt my feelings: “This was Gena Rowlands’ first film after the death of her husband, John Cassavetes. Several of their mutual friends, including Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk, visited the set to see how she was coping.” 🥺🥺🥺

Night on Earth surpassed my expectations. I always love character studies and this is like having five, mini-character studies in one film. Each segment as good as the last.
We are taken to Los Angeles, NYC, Paris, Rome and Helsinki. Each story has it's own personality, much like the individual person driving the taxi, the individuals as passengers and the city themselves are given a perfect opportunity to show their individual personalities too, through the people who live and work there and not to mention the beautiful shots captured on film, city landscapes from the hood of the car and wide shots of the city itself.
Jim Jarmusch did a wonderful job filming each city too, the audience feels as…
At 4am, nobody belongs anywhere, and the whole world is an outcast to the light.
Jim Jarmusch’s “Night on Earth” is an anthology of five cab rides in different cities of the world, all across the evening hours. Starting in the chaotic twilight LAX rush with a frazzled movie producer as a passenger; the film ends in the Scandinavian dawn of an empty Helsinki backstreet - the rider abandoned in the snow to wait for a sun that might never come.
“Night on Earth” unfolds almost entirely within the five individual worlds of its five cabs. While each story retains the energy of the city whose streets it cruises, the metropolises are largely desolate. For a moment - between point…

I'm so glad that I found out about this movie, because I would've missed out on a lot otherwise! Anthology movies are always hit or miss for me. but in this case I was invested in every single story from start to finish. Jim Jarmusch did a spectacular job with creating five unique stories that surely will stay in my head for a while. I also got serious late 70s/ early 80s Martin Scorsese vibes! If you like your films classy, well written, well acted, intelligent, thought provoking yet accessible, and with a great soundtrack , then Night on Earth is for you! This movie combined everything I loved about filmmaking and I adore finding some gems that not many people talk about.
Overall, the movie gave me a renewed appreciation for cinema. Thanks Jarmusch.

It's clear that I haven't watched enough Jarmusch yet. Night on Earth is one of the most enjoyable cinematic experiences I've ever had and that only comes from one thing: it's unbridled realism. Yes, there are some overtly expressive characters in here and some ridiculous cases of black humor but I feel (feel, as this is only my second Jarmusch) that this is exactly the thing that makes his films so worthwhile.
My only other experience with his cinema was his 2014 feature Only Lovers Left Alive, a bleak interpretation of the vampire myth, that lives on its humane undertone in these inexplicable creatures. With Night on Earth this is…
"Try Driving School, you fucking nimrod!"
Armin…
This was a special one for me. I’ve always been fascinated with Jim’s work, but only saw Paterson a couple years ago with expectations of some sort of cute romantic flick.
I honestly wasn’t into it.
Now, as I begin to watch an episode of Fishing with John, I see Jim and there is something about how he composes himself. Something that draws me towards him. So I start watching interviews and then out of nowhere decide to put on this. Mostly cause of Winona.
I’m hesitant with anthology movies, but this worked. I love this gem of a movie. Everything works so wonderfully and I can start to see the intuitive nature of Jim’s filmmaking. Everything comes together flawlessly.…
Los Angeles - 2/5 (sorry Gena Rowlands)
New York - 5/5
Paris - 3/5
Rome - 4/5
Helsinki - 3/5
Probably the best anthology movie I’ve ever seen. There isn’t a dull moment in this entire 2 hour movie and it’s entirely people talking in cabs.
I really really liked this movie and I'm again really into Jim Jarmusch's way of creating these vignettes with interesting conversations in his movies.
Each section had something to like about it but I guess I'll mention them worst to best.
The last section is easily the worst and sort of feels out of sorts with the rest of the movie. It isn't bad, just not as good as the rest. Roberto Benigni carries his section but it is probably next just since it is really just him riffing the whole time. I really liked the Paris section for how odd it was but both the cab driver and the blind women were super cool. Winona Ryder also carries her…
Over the years, but only now and then, I’ve encountered taxi drivers who are good conversationalists, or entertaining personalities, or interesting people, or endearingly strange - and they always remind me of this film.
And I’m sure, looking back, there were just as many taxi drivers who regarded me as friendly, interesting, drunk, weird or a mix of all four.
I hope I reminded at least one or two of Night On Earth.
