a movie made not of plot points, but of subtle (and not) manipulations.
better than people give it credit for. mickey rourke was perfect for this role, his voice & face maintaining this air of playful innocence, even as he treats kim basinger as a whore.
the issue isn’t whether or not mickey’s john is a “bad man” (though, clearly on the spectrum of sociopathy). it’s about attraction and manipulation and control and love somehow, despite everything else. it’s believable that john could love kim’s elizabeth, but differently & even unhealthily, for her. his attraction is more base, her reactions & behavior as opposed to her past & her cultural interests.
this is good, albeit a little soft core—bathed in an 80’s glow.
