Families are dying and reporter Trish (Kelly McGillis) finds herself reporting on a serial killing spree. After her daughter Lisa's (Kate Elliott) best friends are killed, she fears that her family may be on the killers list. Sheriff Webster (Barry Corbin) is not listening to her concerns, which leads Trish to wonder is he or his deputy might be involved. Then Lisa, her boyfriend Ben and her sister Amy receive threats.

Kelly McGillis is a reporter investigating a local murder who comes to realize her teen daughters could be next. Maybe she shouldn't have invited that random hitchhiker over to her house while there's a unknown killer on the loose. Or could it be the daughter's boyfriend whose anger issues surface when he doesn't get his way? The whodunit aspect falls flat since those are really the only two possibilities. Plus, depending on the DVD cover you look at, it may give the killer away before you even start watching. This New Zealand production does a decent job of faking its American small town setting but, unfortunately, that's about the nicest thing I can say about it. The story is generic and predictable, the kills are infrequent and tame, and the whole thing feels like the Lifetime version of a post-Scream slasher.
My direction on this movie was "be enigmatic." So, I attempted to oblige. I remember my friends and I taking Barry Corbin to a cigar bar in the Auckland suburb of Parnell. We would meet again....
Post-Scream slasher from NZ, set in America. High school kids are getting knocked off one by one by an unknown assailant. Evidence points towards various young men as local newscaster Trish and her daughter Lisa try to suss out what's going on with little help from an inept local sheriff's department.
At first, it looked like it was going to be an unashamed Scream/Final Destination teen horror but the lack of scares and gore make the bulk of the runtime a somewhat bland investigative thriller but does pick up towards the end as it moves to more a more hysterical tone.
This again, feels slightly like one of those Kiwi horrors that doesn't really want to be a horror and isn't as good as Laing's earlier film, The Lost Tribe.
only three of the cast can act, making the rest seem truly amateur. many plot swings and trick tropes. rather sucky.
Coach Whitey and Andy in the same movie! The One Tree Hill fan in me was positively giddy about that.
So this is a pretty by the book thriller- made in New Zealand with a mostly NZ cast, even though it tries to convince you it's American by having them put on iffy accents- that has all the implied (but never shown) gore, red herrings, and at times unintentionally hilarious score you would expect. I bought it at a thrift shop simply because I like Kelly McGillis and also am a sucker for obscure movies that ten people have ever seen. The final twist is incredibly weird and makes use of rather ugly mental health stereotypes, which again is typical…
