a crime/revenge thriller wrapped in what is, as a macrocosm, a relationship drama.
absolute genius pulled off by Gyllenhaal’s character Sheffield (which is essentially a testament to the genius of Austin Wright, the writer of the source material) in writing, under the surface, a novel about himself and at the same time the woman who crushed him emotionally, which all ended up being part of his goal. Ford masterfully displayed this, along with the parallels between Morrow and Hastings, through his direction.
great performances all around. Armie Hammer is a dickhead (helps the film in a good way). not enough can be said about it.
one qualm: what kind of middle-aged man from West Texas, who has a wife and daughter and claims to not like people, DOESN’T pack a gun? oh well guess there wouldn’t be much of a story if he did.
